Do You Really Need Antivirus Protection Software
Why you still need antivirus software. So many people have opinions about antivirus on whether you need an antivirus on your pc or whether using just windows defender is enough protection. Windows defender has made large improvements in protecting your computer from ransomware and malware in the last year. there was a time when I would say Windows defender was not good enough on its own, but not no more, its protection is greatly improved. So if someone says don't use antivirus software, remember something is always better than nothing.

I personally haven't used any third party anti-virus for the past 7 years. Every now and again I would run a deep scan using malware bytes but that's about it.

The best virus protection is an educated user. No software will prevent an idiot from opening or clicking on a link. Especially email scams. Thanx Brian

Years ago I used to be a big advocate for Avast. But when they started bloating their AV with so much stuff that I started to notice the performance impact on my system, I threw it away and told everyone else to do the same. It's not the same it used to be, and the corporate art style they adopted is the icing on the cake.

Eset NOD has always been my favorite, the most Lightweight consumes fewer resources.

Not sure if you have done one yet, but could you do a video reviewing other Antivirus Software programs in 2022? Many thanks for all the great tips you bring to viewers!

Windows defender is capable enough and doesn't slow your computer to an absolute crawl. I just use common sense. Don't go to dodgy websites or plug in devices of unknown origin or unknown content into my pc.

Hi Brian, what do you think about Comodo Antivirus?

The funny thing is people don't like windows collecting data but very few say anything about antivirus bundles collecting data on you that's just funny and another thing I found is I've been hacked a few times and the first thing a hacker does is disable your AV software but in my experience, they never disable windows defender

Was a fan of Kaspersky as it did the job quietly. Bitdefender was okay until it took a few gig away in log files. Now on Avast Free but agree, too bloated. Tempted using Windows Defender on it's own but old skool and can't change my image of it.

I used to have Norton 360 on my machine. We still use it on other devices and machines, but on mine it is no more. i was having issues with the pc and I suspect Norton probably messed it up. I couldn't even pause it, the option was greyed out. Before uninstalling it I let it do a full scan, it took over 5 hours. All clean. So unlikely a malware, just some software messed up things that only a full reinstall of the whole system fixed.
I am learning (fast) how to get the most of the inbuilt MS defender and using other tools for online security like configuring browsers better, and, of course, being careful what I click on. I can clean temporary files with a simple command within Windows, don't need any other software to do it for me. Educating myself, learning, less is more sometimes for the PC performance and security. Many apps tend to be data funnels themselves, so they don't need to be in my PC. And for the worst, I have the bitlocker key backed up and all my important data. I am ready to start from scratch any other time!

From what I can recall, the rise of malware and viruses coincided with rises in software prices. People thought 'There's no way I'm paying for that!' and they went off looking for '100% Works! Cracked with serial!' and the vast majority of what they found was crawling! Then, they went to get any AV they could and it would always make them pay to get rid of whatever they'd picked up. AVG was good and free, but, boy was that thing a vampire! It needed 2gb of RAM to work properly alongside Windows and that was when the average desktop had 512mb. These days, if you know where to look, there are decent free alternatives to much of the paid software you think you need to use. If you stick with that, you should only need Windows Security. Just be careful where you surf!!

Many thanks Britec.. i didn't know whether to turn on periodic scanning by Windows Defender as i thought it would clash with Bitdefender free that i use.. Am i better off with Bitdefender or the improved Windows Defender? Many thanks

Way back in 2005, I had a Acer Win XP and never used a virus protector for the 4 yrs I had the laptop. Never had problems. Not wise, I know. But today, things are more techie & savvy.

Always used Avira, its never ever gave me any issues and it feels like it never has any negative CPU impact on my PC. used many others and they always make my fps drop or i can feel something draggin ECT.

Antivirus software is really necessary, cause windows defender lacks many features that an antivirus software offers.
Kaspersky Bitdefender are really good.

I prefer not keep Antivirus software running in background, as machine starts I perform a database update, quick scan and close it down.
After that I will perform deep scan once a week.

Antivirus softwares heavily affect system performance by scanning literally everything.
