Is Windows Defender Enough To Stay Protected
Microsoft Windows Defender is getting closer than ever when it comes to competing with other third-party antivirus software, but in my opinion, it’s still not good enough. Its OK for basic free protection, but it’s certainly not good enough compared to dedicated antivirus programs like ESET, Kaspersky, Bitdefender and Norton. I would say its not quite as good at protection you against Ransomware as other leading software and Windows Defender also struggles in removing infections once they are on the pc system running live.

I have never been infected with ransomware but I can imagine how bad it must be for anyone that has experienced that. I'll continue to use Defender. I find that the paid versions offer too much stuff that I don't need so a freeware alternative will always be my first choice.

Good information. The side by side comparison between Norton and Defender did a good job of showing Defender's weaknesses. Definitely has me considering purchasing one of the "premium" antivirus services.

I currently use the built-in Windows protections, but have used Emsisoft Anti-Malware in the past. Emsisoft also offers an Emergency Kit, which is a scanner that can be used without installation to help scan and clean infected computers.

Defender is generally fine. The only snag is it only really works well providing you remain connected to the internet. If you are offline the protection really drops. Also I would always advise to use the controlled folder access feature as if you are relying on it it's the only way to ensure you don't get stung by ransomware.

As a side note Windows firewall has also been associated with slowing down internet connections.

A very well explained and detailed video.

Very useful video. Like with all other maladies, prevention is better than cure. That's as much related to an individual's online behaviour and habits as it is to having antivirus software. For my part, I've relied on Windows Defender almost exclusively for the past few years. I'll sometimes run a scan with something different just to double-check, but so far so good. But, never say never!

Great Video.. Thanks Brian 🙂 I may just use eset or Kapersky. I don't do much downloading and i certainly don't open email links. I also don't open seedy sites either. This helped me a lot.

Very good Britec! An actual infected 2023 Win Defender scan, results and remedial fixes with tools included! Hope you can show us a Backup routine in fine detail, Thank you immensely! 😇🙏

I use Malwarebytes and also have Windows Defender enabled. They seem to be perfect working together. Defender needs to back up Malwarebytes because its not a specialist anti-virus program.

Hello Brian, thank you for the very informative video! I was wondering if having Trend Micro on your router ( ASUS) has any advantages working with installed antivirus on PC? If so, what can be said about Trend Micro protection? Thank you.

I agree with your summation and tend to recommend Bitdefender, Avira and Kaspersky for a free option.
For people that want to use Defender, I tend to recommend they use with a better firewall or enhance the existing one with something like Windows Firewall Control.
Due to the mess of a UI I also recommend using an alternative front end, like Defender UI or Windows Defender Configurator.
Both alternative front ends offer much better default profiles than the Defender defaults.

I have found that many of my clients are looking for the magic bullet to protect their systems. One element often overlooked in malware protection is an informed computer operator.

I tried NPE before and it said all my Ren'py games were infected. So, I never used it again. I'll stick to BitDefender for the Windows system. Great video as always.

Hi Bri, Bitdefender firewall was suggested to me so I paid for the pro version. I then spent a huge amount of time searching what the Bitdefender firewall wanted me to decide what to let through or what to block. I called Bitdefender and they wasn't helpful, they basically said I should know or search what their firewall is asking me yes or no, I wanted premium protection, but with Bitdefender I had to tell the software what to do in the firewall. I blocked some things that were safe and let through unsafe ones so after a year I cancelled Bitdefender as I had to do all the work for the firewall many times in one hour. My windows defender doesn't hassle me every ten minutes like Bitdefender did. Are there any pro or premium software that doesn't expect the user to tell the firewall what to let through every ten minutes. This was helpful. Thanks

Best protection is yourself, use ransome ware protection built into one drive. Other 3rd parties are also massive resource hogs. So in theory win defender is fine

I would like to see you do some comparisons of different antivirus Software

Great video! Use the offline scanner in Defender to try and remove the malware. It actually does a decent job at flushing them out although it might not get all at once but good enough to stabilize the OS and then another third party tool should completely removed the rest of the viruses.

Hi Brian, I found this video very interesting and try to keep on top of all things security on my PC. One thing you didn't mention was Microsoft Safety Scanner. I personally run that once a week as a back up to my anti-virus. What are your thoughts on this bit of free software from Microsoft? Thanks Brian.

Hello there, thank you for making this video, my question is, new malware and threats that are meant to run on windows, I imagine that they would more likely to be made to overpower the default windows antivirus am I right? so, can windows keep up if its the first to be breached?
