Worst Cars Ever Made | Saturn Ion Redline

The Saturn Ion Redline is one of the worst cars ever made, and here's why. Now, before you get angry about me talking poorly on this economy car featuring the same engine as the Cobalt SS save for the turbocharger swap on its more successful twin, the Saturn Ion Redline was a mistake of a vehicle for the restrictions it had. You may not even know Saturn anymore, but as the General Motors experiment arm, this car was one that probably should have stayed in a test tube.

Current stage 3 ion redline owner here - it wasn't trying to be an econocar, it was performance version of one. A smaller pulley really gets these going!

The plastic panels were the best part. Cosmetically the Saturns held up better than just about any other vehicle. Sure, they look odd, but after 20 years they don't have pealing clearcoat, faded paint, or random dents and dings. My biggest problem with the Ions was the center mounted instrument cluster.

“Shouldn’t have been an econo car” that’s literally why it’s cool bro it’s supercharged four cylinder economy car

I have had my redline for almost 3 years, and it's had zero issues and it is such a fun car to drive.

As a 20 plus year Saturn technician, and the one responsible at my retailer for doing the upgrades on these, I thought they were a pretty cool car. I'm a bit partial to the S series though. People like Kilmer say it was junk. The only ones that were junk were the ones people didn't maintain. I've seen them with 450k and no major failures. I have a 92 that's been in the sun most of it's life and the paint on the polymer panels is still like new. Those little cars were a breeze to work on and with a 3/8s impact and a dream, I bought a house and 40 acre farm by servicing them. By the way, the LSJ platform, it can support close to 1000hp. The engine block and platform is really tough.

whoa yo, I'm sorry, i had/fully built a Saturn, and it was my favorite car ever. Saturn was a FANTASTIC company, we were just too unfortunate to see it and love it for what it was.

The paint was perfectly fine, plastic panels don’t rust, aesthetics were perfectly adequate in its day, and the engine is capable of gobs of reliable power especially when considering a turbo swap from the blower. Very very difficult to beat in the dollar per hp realm.

To each their own opinion. As someone that's driven one daily for 13 years now. The car is extremely reliable and the paint on my has held up amazing to be a 16 year old car. Still on the original clutch lol. They did cut corners and its raw in ways but it works. The interior still looks brand new. Best part it's a fun car to drive even in 2022. Everyone seems to think I'm lieing when I say the car is 16 years old. How the car handles is my favorite thing about it. Even years later it pulls away from most new cars . Especially in the curves.

It was a competing trim with the Cobalt SS, which had the same exact layout, transmission, wheelbase, and engine, yet was marginally faster simply due to it being a plastic car 😅

These were great little sport compacts
Lots of aftermarket

Only available in manual too!

Thanks for making this video, now I can find one that I can actually afford ;)
But really, it’s just a more convenient Cobalt SS

Nice rant there bud, but the Saturn Ion Redline is an awesome little car. Sure the body has weird proportions and the sides are all plastic but who cares? Why not be different! They are fast
fun cars that are easy to tune, and getting rarer everyday.

My first new car was a Saturn back in 1996 and have gotten them ever since. There engines do not like to die even after 300, 000 miles. As long as I can find one that is what I am sticking with. So easy to work on and can never find a more reliable car. I bought a 2003 Vue last year with only 58, 000 original miles.
