Just to help people understand how silly this question really is, remember that El is, in its meaning and usage, virtually identical to the Germanic word God. This is like asking, "Are YHWH and God different deities?" Whoever YHWH is, He would have been referred to as El. Just like pagan Greeks, Stoic Philosophers, and Christians referred to the one they each specifically worshipped with the generic title Theos (God), so *whoever* the early Semities worshipped, they would have referred to Him as El. The pagan Semites called their highest deity El (god), and the Yawist Israelites referred to YHWH as El (god).
So I hope people understand how silly these kinds of things really are.

So, for the Canaanites, El was the word for God but El was also the name of a God. El Elyon means "God most high" but it also was the name of the God that was El's father. The Sumerians had the same system of gods where the God in charge wasn't necessarily the oldest or most powerful. Enlil was there God of gods but his father An was older and more powerful. His name meant "sky" or "heavens" but that was also his name. That just how it was back then.

This is literally like asking " are Yahweh and God different deities??" What a silly question. El just means God, YHWH is the personal name of God, and Elyon means the Most High. Yahweh is the most high God = YHWH is El Elyon. Simpleas that.

The NRSVue (the translation which scholars consider to be the most accurate) actually implies that Yahweh was the one who divided the nations, and then kept Israel as his own:

*Deuteronomy 32:8-9*

When the Most High apportioned the nations,

So Marks Smiths "Option 1" would suggest that there are several others available related to the topic that Id be interested to see. With that being said, El was well known and established throughout the Canaanite Pantheon, and the academic consensus is that El, and Yhwh were separate. Hints the name Isra-El, Beth-El, Immanu-El, vs Isra-Yh etc. Its also important to note that the Deir Allah inscriptions identifies Balaam Bel Boer (the first of which where a biblic character is named from outside of the hebrew bible) from the Bible, where this inscription discusses the Shadday (wilderness) Gods who are sons of El, and planning some form of rebellion.

There are other sources which contradict your interpretation.
It is likely as scholars have shown that Yahweh came from the south with the Shasu Yhw from Teman and Mt Paran in Midian. Interestingly Moses encountered Yahweh at the burning bush in Midian (Exodus 3:1, 2; Deuteronomy 33:2; Habakuk 3:3)
El was the principle Caananite deity worshipped in the region long before Yahweh.
Yahweh and El were fused together and polemics in the bible were written about El's son Baal, to establish Yahweh as the supreme national god. (1Kings 18:26, 27)

The True Almighty God is not Yahweh. El Elyon is the One true God. Jesus was sent by El Elyon to free us of the God of the Hebrews who called himself Yahweh. Look at Yahweh in the old testament. His characteristics of are a being known as Lucifer. The God of the old testament is a far cry from the Loving Father Christ Jesus came to reveal. El Elyon is who Christ came to show us.

Pretty sure El is the father of Baal. Baal means lord does that mean you're lord? No. It doesn't. Context is everything. Especially if your taking it from another language.

The way I read that passage is God gave the nations their areas but kept Israel for Himself. 🤷‍♂️
