How is graduate physics different from undergraduate physics?

The main difference is coursework vs research and the different skills they require. Being good at exams doesn't mean you will make a great research scientist. Instead, important skills for research are creativity, communication and patience. I talk about my experience as an Australian PhD student in physics.

The way she speaks, slow and confident and smoothly makes it really awesome to listen to.

Awesome video! Really put things into perspective with other people counting on you in grad school, vs slacking off in undergrad only affecting you.

Years ago when I studied my PhD, my supervisor said to me, ” if you cannot find the answer from Jackson, (we were talking about electromagnetism) your question does not exist”.

It is a classic joke about maths and Jackson.

I'm going through a rocky phase in the second year of my undergrad degree from India. The work culture in our college is downright hideous, our professors are all soulless robots and the university to which our college is affiliated to is a sick joke on society as far as exam evaluation is concerned (I had to spend close to 30 Aussie dollars just to get my Physics major papers re-evaluated).

Many a times I sit and wonder whether I chose right, and the only thing that drives me now is the hope that post-grad will be better than this (if I get an IIT or a Major University that is). This video of yours has refreshed my spirits and I'm back to egging on till I get the position in academia that I always dreamt of. Thank you so much Tibees 😍😍😍😍😁😁😁😁

Jackson, Goldstein, Sakurai, Arfken, Peskin were my best friends in my first two years as a graduate student before jumping into independent research on theoretical particle physics.

What I know about physics probably could be written on a sheet of A5 with space to spare. But I do know a good communicator when I see one. And you are a good communicator.

Thanks for the great content. I'm still plugging my way through the undergraduate physics/math curriculum. Definitely looking forward to the graduate stage of physics.

I like the day when I subscribed this channel. I am from a developing country in Africa with Msc in space physics ( ionospheric physics). The people here in my university are tired of buying equipments from abroad, so I want to shift to electrical engineering in order to design these equipments. Do you think that will it be such easy? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi, really enjoy your videos. As an idea, I hope you could show more examples along with talking us through it, I'd be pretty interested in many of the subjects covered in your videos but in detail!

Oh boy, I remember going through the Jackson for my electrodynamics course in 4th year undergrad. I referred to it a little bit during my master's, but I didn't have any courses in electrodynamics so I'm glad...

you get your phd only after you discover something new. is That true?

I admire your footstep. I cant wait to jump there and make my contributions too.

have a nice day Tibees;
in my opinion you should firstly study to classical electrodynamics griffiths.
if you have difficulties with the basic topics about electricity and magnetism, you should study firstly serway physics chapter 23-34
take care

Yeah it’s pretty rare to get your PhD in some Math or Science field in less than 4 years here in the US. Not unheard of but the average is somewhere around 4-6 maybe 7 years.

Just checked - my Jackson is first edition :-) It was one of my textbooks during the second undergrad year.
