What can you do with a physics degree?

Considering studying a physics major? This is a little bit of insight into what kind of job you might end up doing after graduation.
Many physics students go on to graduate studies (like myself) but many others find jobs in very diverse fields, from software to startups. I would recommend physics as a major that gives you a very broad range of options.

Ask me any further questions!

I did math/physics major for my undergrad, PhD in statistical physics from ANU, did my postdoc in computational biology and now working as senior scientist in the field in new york. I definitely agree that physics graduates are highly sought after in data science and finances, where it requires high-level of problem solving skills. It opened up so many possibilities for me. Although people call me nerd, these nerds are highly valued in the job market.

I don't get it. I graduated in physics, but I can't find a job.

I did an undergraduate degree in physics, then switched to a graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering (Engineering Mechanics to be precise). I have been work 35 years doing advanced vibration analysis of rotating equipment and structures. I was far better prepared for my graduate degree than my colleagues whom had undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering.

I️ know a physics PhD from Geneva who today runs a data science consultancy and makes 300k (USD) a year. Another Swiss physics PhD I️ know works as an actuary and must make around 400k (CHF). Investment banks hire physics PhDs in New York and pay them a starting salary of 220k as quants. The telecoms industry also pays well. Physics is the most versatile of degrees.

Great video! Thank you... I wish I had your insight and confidence. I'm a MSc in Physics and a Geologist, and I work as a software developer. At this point of my career I'm kind of lacking motivation. You present an insightful big picture of what one can do with a Physics degree. Perhaps I should broaden my field of vision so to speak.

I've watched this before getting into University and I'm watching it going to my 2nd year... I'm feeling quite lost, but I also want to have my Physics degree and find myself in this major, even if I choose a very different path once I graduate... I'll probably watch this vid again later.

Thank you for this. I’ve been absolutely torn between physics, engineering, and neuroscience because of how multidisciplinary the field of neuro-tech is. This non-click bait video was incredibly genuine and came from the exact kind of person I wanted an opinion from (a person who has gone down the physics road and is describing the journey as well as where it could possibly lead). Thank you
