The Perfect TED Talk That Never Happened

This is an adaptation of Brian Nosek's Paper: Scientific Utopia: II.

Follow:

Music:
Martin Fowler - Ships III
Anthony Barilla - The man who shot liberty valence 8
Anthony Barilla - Totally Rude Variations 8

Shownotes:
Scientific Utopia: II. Restructuring incentives and practices to promote truth over publishability

A final note: I did change certain facts within Dr. Nosek's paper in order to make it more relevant to today, e.g. TED. This was done with Dr. Nosek's permission and all changes were taken in the "hypothetical success" section, so no factual parts of this story are different.

That study was so ridiculous, that if you didn't immediately want to recreate it, I would argue you might want to rethink your career as a scientist.

They could have fooled me -- but they chose not to.

Thank you for spotlighting this. We need more courageous scientists. And people that believe their results.

I never thought that scientists are pressured to make scientific discoveries that are sensational to the average audience. I always thought of them as logical and constantly finding for the truth, never thinking about the opinions of those who know less.

Scientists have feelings too. This is eye opening. Thank you.

Everyone: You can’t trust the news, or popular media. It’s all sensationalist.
Science: *sweats*

I appreciate the spotlight you're putting on the need for replication.

It is ridiculous how reputable journals don't take effort to replicate studies which are (like this one) easily replicable. Scientific Journals have become a sad money making business.

I work in a PhD in computer science, specifically in computer graphics. An interesting aspect of the research we do is that we cannot publish a result in a top conference (especially SIGGRAPH) if there isn't an industrial application behind it.

Reviewers as well as industrials will tell you "Okay, but why did you do that?" "Okay, how can I make use of that?" or straight up dismiss your foundings. Just my 2 cents on the subject

It's insane how well made this video was. All that information in only 3 minutes, no point was dragged on and the visuals enhanced what the narrator was explaining. Excellent work!

but when is ted going to show up himself?

I love how this video is so short compared to others, but it covers one of the biggest problems in the world ( desinformation ) in its perfection.

I just like to dream that the TED Talk would be called, "50 Shades of Gray. No Not The Book."

I immediately thought that it didn't sound right. "That sounds like bullshit" is the exact thought that popped into my head

“How you view the world changes your worldviews” Damn, just felt so RIGHT to read for some reason. Pure Gladwell.

Just the other day I saw a meme that said "97% of scientists agree with the one thats pays them."
