Fresh homegrown strawberries are a delicious taste of summer, but there are never enough! Fortunately, it's easy to make more - absolutely free.

Strawberries produce long, leafless stalks called runners. These can be used to propagate new strawberry plants which are ready to begin cropping next season.

In this short video we explain how to easy it is to make new strawberry plants from runners so you can have an even bigger and better strawberry harvest next year.

If you love growing your own food, why not take a look at our online Garden Planner which is available from several major websites and seed suppliers:

As for the pin that holds the runners down, I can also recommend a paperclip. You have to bend it into an upside-down U and you can peg the new plants down. That's what I did.

Great grow guide! This is my first year with gardening (especially in containers) and this was very informative. Thanks!

the weird thing is i've never taken care of my family's strawberry plant since we first got it 2-3 years ago, and i've recently reignited my interest in the strawberry plant so it's nice to know how to propagate them so we continue getting a lot of strawberries, and now i even know how to get more from the same plant!

Great info. I grew my first babies last season with this method and had so many plants I gave some to my neighbour who is growing his own baby plants now. I had some fruit too in the first year and will be propagating more again. I prefer to keep them in containers so they don't spread. Its great when you see all your babies growing and they are such tough plants its hard to go wrong. You cannot beat your own strawberries, they are so much better than anything you can get in the supermarkets. I am currently recycling an old metal filing cabinet into my new strawberry planter ready for next year.

I had a cheaky runner pop itself into a pot that I was trying to use to grow a french bean plant (didn't work). Glad I saw this, now I know what to do next. LOL

It does work well. I've done both the pots and digging to relocate. Created many to share with friends, also.

I plant strawberries in long mounded rows with drip line under 4 ft wide black plastic. I punch a hole for runners (stolons) and put them in between plants to try and create long continuous rows. It keeps them from spreading out too much and on the drip line. I don't even have to worry about cutting the runner. Once full, then I may do pots near plants and get new separate plants at year 3.

4 years ago one of the runners of my strawberry plants rooted in the thin strip of rubble in-between the house wall and some flags it obviously doesn't produce much fruit due to its location but adds some charm to the boring flags so I have no intention of moving it(it was also the only plant left due to vine weevils killing the others). However it produced some runners this year which I have propagated and moved into the veg plot

Does the runner need to be connected to the parent plant..?

Hi and thanks for the video very help full. The strawberry plants I get, grow grand sending out runners which I know now how to grow new strawberry plants from. The issue is how do you keep the fruit from going bad if it is sitting close or even on the soil. Thanks

Thanks for this! I realised I had so many runners and I tried replanting them. Unfortunately the leaves are withering and I’m hoping it’s just an adjustment?
Do you think they’ll survive? I’m not sure if this is normal
