Nikon D7500 Review: Mini D500 or A Big Bust?

I give a full hands on review of the Nikon D7500. Is this a mini D500 with a $1,250 price tag or is a big bust? It's a great camera actually but Nikon's omissions of a future features is definitely puzzling and Canon like. If you need a camera for speed and fast autofocus, this Nikon D7500 is a great option. While this does have 4K video, it is cropped by 1.3xs. So with the D7500 already being a cropped sensor camera, you then get the 4K crop as well. A bit of a turn off. The button layout is very good for the camera but the ergonomics are a touch off. The biggest flaw is only having one SD card slot...come on Nikon. But I can still see a market for this camera if someone can not or does not want to save up for the Nikon D500. The choice is yours.

For what it's worth, the Nikon D7500 is a great camera with an affordable price tag. But it's not for everyone.

Dude.... Are you legitimately a giant lol? You make that D7500 look like a child's toy in the thumbnail pic.

I bought the Nikon D7500 last month and I’m taking some amazing pictures with it. I chose a Tamron 150-600mm G2 lens for wildlife & now that I understand a bit more regarding aperture, shutter speed & iso, I ‘m shooting in manual mode and I am very pleased with it and have some very sharp detailed pictures of birds in flight even zoomed @ 300-500mm.
This camera is capable of better pics than my skills at the moment but I am learning more everyday. I bought the Nikon 18-140mm kit lens ( used on eBay) that was like new condition for $175 and it’s perfect for landscape & general photography.
Great video btw. I’m sure I’ll I will upgrade in a year or two but not until I master this camera and all its features. I think the D850 would be an amazing camera as an upgrade from this. Thanks.

I'm using the D7500 with 200-500mm f5.6 lens and its burst shooting capabilities are remarkable.  I've used D7100 and D7200 before,  super fast and accurate focusing at 8fps makes this camera a beast at this price range. Auto Fine Tune is also a nice feature.

I've used a d850 for a long time now I picked this camera up at an estate sale for 500 usd last month and I'm floored at what this little thing can do. Particularly when you pair it with any of nikons' fx lenses, which I have quite a few of. I slapped the Sigma 150 to 600 on for an effective 900 mm reach, and that is a killer combo. In twenty years of photography I've never had a card fail I don't buy cheap knockoffs when it comes to cards or battery's and you shouldn't either. Great video by the way good info and to the point.

Eric Rossi it’s an excellent camera, great for travel, wildlife especially without breaking the bank like the D500 does and we use with a 16-80mm for amazing quality product photography that we do professionally. for certain situations this camera is choice over our D750

I did a touchy feely..& pricey test today if the 3400; 5600; 7500;500; and the z6
I liked the feel of the z6 and that it's quiet, the 500 was big, the 5600 was too lite and small..does this sound like Goldie locks and the 3 bears? I ended up choosing the 7500. I knew it has drawbacks...but it's my first dslr, and definitely an upgrade from slrs.
Thanks I loved your critic, it sounds spot on.

I thought of buying the D500 but later I bought the D7500 because its better. It has a built-in flash. I more often need a small fill flash rather than a second SD card slot. If I need more memory I just pop in a 128GB card

Thank you for sharing your thoughts etc... a very useful presentation. I am grateful for everyone's comments as I am seriously considering upgrading my D90. I have three DX lenses so don't need to apportion potential savings for glass. Still don't know which way to go D7500 or D500 - back and forth like a yoyo! Second card slot and grip issues not important to me. Amateur/enthusiast level, keen to learn more... enjoy shooting outdoors, landscape, buildings, etc have the budget for either but leaning towards D7500 as it has built-in flash and is significantly lighter.

Very nice review thank you. I own the D500 (bought second hand for 700$) and was looking to get a second camera body as backup. Should I get a second D500 or a D7500 ? Any advantages for the D7500 ?

Thank you Eric for another interesting and informative review, I really love the D7500, its a wonderful enthusiast camera, its totally not directed at any pro work but for what it is I think its a great buy. If I was into APS-C and not working photographer this would be a camera that I would probably buy.

I couldn't care less about one card slot and the UHS1limitation with the shooting I do. I never use video. I have no need for a grip. I've got all the lenses, so given this month's price at $800US or $999Cdn, I will likely get one

If I'm 15 (though i have done this for a while and have gotten in the top 100 5 times in competitions with over 1, 000 people) and have a d3500 (50, 000+ shutter actuations) with some good glass and shoot wildlife would this be a good upgrade?

Nikon wouldn’t take a risk. With 2 slots for d7500, the d500 would be less popular with event photographers.

Thanks for the review.
Will only buy this camera if I'm struggling to save up for the D500.
Good review.

Hi there, nice video.
I really need some help here:
So, I´m new in dslr world, I never used a dslr camera before
I have a 2000 euro budget
I have 2 choise:
-1. Buy D7500, now discount to 1250 euro with 18-140mm f3.5-5.6G kit. If I buy this, I have money to spend on 50mm f1.8g and buy a tripod, bag, memory, and some other stufs.
-2. Buy the Nikon D750 Kit + AF-S 24-120 VR for 1899 euro. That means I dont have money for other stufs, just for memory, but no bag, no nothing.

So, the 2000 euro question it´s, as a novice beginner, buy the d7500, or the d750?

I want to use it:
1. To learn
2. Then make food photos for web and for restaurant photos.
3. Later for wedding and portraits. Wanna make some money.

And here its my theory:
If I buy D7500 I will have a lot of accessories. Then If I like it and I´m getting pro and need a fullframe, I still can buy a used d750 and use the optics from d7500 (please correct me if I´m wrong)

Whats yore opinion?
Please help me to make my choise

I’m very new to photography, but I’m in the process of learning. I want my first camera to last me for a long time and suit my needs. I have plans to travel this upcoming year and have had my eyes on this one - would you suggest this?
