Nikon D7500 Preview (vs D500, D7200)

The D7200 had a bigger buffer than I said; sorry for the error. Though the specific number was wrong, we still ran into buffering problems on the D7200, and it's better on the D7500.

I think it all depends on one's particular situation and budget. I tried the 7200, 500 and 7500 (which I now own). I chose the 7500 (mainly for bird photography) and am very happy with the combination of features at an intermediate price. If I were a pro, I'd care about having two card slots but I'm not and have never had a card failure. If I ever take a costly vacation, I can rent a camera with two slots. I care more about the weight (as a woman of slight build) that, in combination with a long lens, affects my ability to steady it and how long I can shoot without fatigue. I use a 100-400 Tamron lens, also comparatively light, and find the combo ideal for my particular needs.

This is an absolutely biased a terrible review. Tony is clearly hellbent on directing people away from buying the 7500. I’ve shot with Nikon’s DX format models for 10+ years, and the D7500 is hands down the best camera I’ve ever shot with. Only 1 SD card slot isn’t a problem for 99.999% of people (myself included). I’ve never once (not once) had an expensive SD card fail. As for it’s sensor, it literally uses the EXACT same sensor/processor as the D500, which is arguably the best DX model that Nikon has ever produced. Yes, if you want to complain about going from 24mp to 20.9mp, go ahead and do so. You’ll need to print a 24x36 photo in order to notice anything (which would be minimal at best). I’ve yet to meet a single person who bought the D7500 and regrets it. As I said, it’s an amazing camera.

I have been using the D7500 for about two weeks, moved up from a D5100. This was an excellent upgrade, from that level. If you have a 7000 series, especially a D7200 don't get a 7500, as that is a lateral move. Faster shooting, better focus, the 4K video is nice from 1080 on the 5100, and of course, the newer AF-P lenses can be used. Sure it doesn't have dual ports for SD and QxD, but it's fine with me.

Great review Tony as always, but it seems like most are bashing the 7500 for what is not, instead of appreciating what it is. Just a thought.

+Tony & Chelsea Northrup Great content! The D7200 has a 18 Raw buffer. It's the D7100 that shoots 6 raw before buffer runs out. :D

Just replaced my D7200 for the D500  a couple of weeks ago and looking at the spec for the Nikon D7500, the D500 was worth paying the extra cash for.

D500 having better noise pattern(Expeed 5) than D7200 and in my view half stop better than D7200 ....metering System is way more advance and accurate which is also borrowed by D7500 ....if u r saying D3300 and D500 having same Image quality ....
this is very negetive kind of Review ....

Nikon removed one SD card in order to protect the sales of the D500. Anyone looking for dual sd card within the DX realm will have to step up to the d500.

I am a retired still photography enthusiast. I bought a new D5300 a few months ago. This video, like others I have seen, reinforces that I made a good decision. Mind you anything was good since I upgraded from a D80, reliable, but definitely aging.

Hey Tony, I used to shoot with the D5000 and Macro work with my D5200 and recently upgraded to the D7500. I believe it does have the motor in the body to drive Nikkor D lenses (Yes, I tried it). It can allow me to "fine focus" my prime lenses to a higher focus level. The processor is the fastest made by Nikon and it has far more AF sensors and a faster tracking compared to anything I've had the pleasure to shoot. Though my budget will not allow me to buy a D500 (as though that were a pro camera) the D7500 is in my price range. If I were serious about wedding shoots it would Not be done with a DX camera but rather a FX, either a D800 or go all the way with a D850. But for the Enthusiast shooter, this camera is fine. If it came down to slapping big bucks down for Pro work, I would pass on the D500 and get the D850 (but most would be fine with the old D800 at 36px).

Another good review from Tony, however as he doesn't wear glasses allow me to add my 2 cents worth. The D500 has a weak 16mm of eye relief making it difficult to see the whole viewfinder with glasses. What good is 100% viewfinder coverage if you cant see the whole screen with glasses on? The D7500 has a somewhat better 18.5mm and the D7200 is the tops of these three at 19.5mm. Now depending this may or may not be an issue for you but before laying out your money on line try and look hands on at one.

The D7500 does have a screw drive for focusing older D lenses. You can see it in pics of the mount, and the manual states that it does AF with D lenses. What was removed was the AI indexing tab for metering with old non-CPU AI-S lenses.

This may be easy to answer, but I don't know because I don't shoot video with my gear. Why do most DSLR's shooting video have that jerky missing frame look when panning? Is it the IS in the lenses that causes it? Really enjoy your guys videos.

The screw-drive motor still remains!! It's the Ai (auto indexing) coupling which has been removed.

Have the D5600 and used it over about 10 days recently. The snapbridge app worked amazingly well. I'm not sure why it worked so well with my D5600 and Apple iPhone 7+ but every pic transferred and quickly. This camera has 1 SD slot so I was pleased that the pics backed-up immediately and the GPS feature was also much appreciated.

tempted to buy the d7500 just for the tilting screen😂. I can never see over crowds - short people problems.

D5300 here! Gonna stick to it until I go full frame and that's it!

WIll only upgrade lenses. Let's stopp wasting money on upgrading bodies that will be old anyway soon.

I really want Nikon to do well and be very profitable. But these steps backwards, and this is not the first time, really hurt them.

The 7200 is such a great pro-am camera. A camera that a serious photographer wanting to go pro can use until they can afford the D500/D5. Just increase the buffer and and put in the tilting touchscreen. That's it and people would be happy and buy. Lots.

Great vid! Appreciate the Pro vs Non-Pro shooter recommendations. Sometimes us amateurs get caught up over "pro" features that we'll rarely use.
