CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When they put a girl in the cell with Spartacus (Kirk Douglas) to watch him ravage her, he stands defiant and won't do it.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Spartacus (Kirk Douglas) is a rebellious slave purchased by Lentulus Batiatus (Peter Ustinov), owner of a school for gladiators. For the entertainment of corrupt Roman senator Marcus Licinius Crassus (Laurence Olivier), Batiatus' gladiators are to stage a fight to the death. On the night before the event, the enslaved trainees are "rewarded" with female companionship. Spartacus' companion for the evening is Varinia (Jean Simmons), a slave from Brittania. When Spartacus later learns that Varinia has been sold to Crassus, he leads 78 fellow gladiators in revolt. Word of the rebellion spreads like wildfire, and soon Spartacus' army numbers in the hundreds. Escaping to join his cause is Varinia, who has fallen in love with Spartacus, and another of Crassus' house slaves, the sensitive Antoninus (Tony Curtis). The revolt becomes the principal cog in the wheel of a political struggle between Crassus and a more temperate senator named Gracchus (Charles Laughton). Anthony Mann was the original director of Spartacus, eventually replaced by Stanley Kubrick, who'd previously guided Douglas through Paths of Glory. The film received 4 Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Ustinov. A crucial scene between Olivier and Curtis, removed from the 1967 reissue because of its subtle homosexual implications, was restored in 1991, with a newly recorded soundtrack featuring Curtis as his younger self and Anthony Hopkins standing in for the deceased Olivier.

This is a man with dignity, respect and compassion for others.

In my view, this is what a *real* tough guy acts like. What really makes a man strong is the ability to stare down his own selfishness to do what he knows is right.

Rest in peace Kirk Douglas, one of the last surviving movie stars from the golden age of Hollywood. Proud father of Michael Douglas an actor and producer in his own right and a oscar winner.

"I am not an animal".neither am I "
these two sentences define what great human beings Spartacus and Virinia were. Spartacus handing over Virinia's clothes to her is a profound gesture. this scene is an epic moment in history of movies

This moment hit me. Any other man would’ve taken advantage of her, but he chose to do the right thing, and that is the reason she began to love him. He loved her for who she was, not for what she looked like. He hated what the people were trying to do to him and her. This movie was more than a movie about slavery. It was about how freedom comes at a cost. Tell me... why in the world did I watch this movie?! I’m emotionally scared for life. Yet I wanna watch it over and over again. Tragic movie indeed.

You made some of my favorite movies growing up, and watching your films reminds me what a gem the world has lost.

I like how Jean Simmons maintains an air of almost regal clas despite the most degrading situation, and of course Spartacus didn't stoop to his baser instincts.

Such a great scene right here! It really shows the humanity of Spartacus. His treatment of Varinia as a human being displays this all too well.

EDIT: Just got the news of Kirk Douglas' death. A damn good actor he was and will be missed! May he rest in peace!

Watching this movie made me feel such a wholesome feeling for Spartacus's and Varinia's relationship, this scene alone shows how he's not willing to objectify her and he actually understands her as a human being, with feelings and all, this is what we should all aspire for in our treatment to others and I love Spartacus for having taught me, a young man that lesson, thank you to Howard Fast and everyone who participated in this movie, this is a masterpiece

Such a beautiful 'Love Theme' so much so it became a jazz standard in the 60s.

This is my favorite scene from the movie. Varinia is terrified but resigned to the idea of being r****d and, therefore, already takes off her clothes before Spartacus even begins to do anything to her.
As for Spartacus, he temporarily forgets the Roman watching him and looks at Varinia as if he is experiencing the magic of a romantic encounter without thinking about doing what the Romans expect of him. Then, he comes back to reality with the two Romans who say "Come on, we want to have fun" and where many slaves would have given in for survival, he asserts his humanity and refuses to r**e Varinia because he does not want to even if his survival comes at the cost of doing a monstrous thing. This prompts Varinia to assert her humanity as well. Then, he gives her back her clothes in a very soft way, making her understand that he will do nothing to her because he respects her as a human.
It is only later in the film that they sleep together alone, not to amuse out of survival reflex, but out of genuine love with no one to spoil their intimacy.
Everyone says Varinia is just a useless side character but I don't agree. If Spartacus revolts, it's because he doesn't want to be separated from her after learning that she had been sold therefore separated from him. If he hadn't met her, he would have resigned himself to a slave's life. Therefore, Varinia is the one who allows Spartacus to realize that he could live a free human life if he is able to say "no". So, to anyone who says Varinia is useless...
F*** YOU!!

The funny thing is that kirk Douglas didn't win the Oscar it indicates that being a talented actor is not enough to get it!
