CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Crassus (Laurence Olivier) finally identifies the rebel Spartacus (Kirk Douglas) and commands him to fight his friend Antoninus (Tony Curtis) to the death.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Spartacus (Kirk Douglas) is a rebellious slave purchased by Lentulus Batiatus (Peter Ustinov), owner of a school for gladiators. For the entertainment of corrupt Roman senator Marcus Licinius Crassus (Laurence Olivier), Batiatus' gladiators are to stage a fight to the death. On the night before the event, the enslaved trainees are "rewarded" with female companionship. Spartacus' companion for the evening is Varinia (Jean Simmons), a slave from Brittania. When Spartacus later learns that Varinia has been sold to Crassus, he leads 78 fellow gladiators in revolt. Word of the rebellion spreads like wildfire, and soon Spartacus' army numbers in the hundreds. Escaping to join his cause is Varinia, who has fallen in love with Spartacus, and another of Crassus' house slaves, the sensitive Antoninus (Tony Curtis). The revolt becomes the principal cog in the wheel of a political struggle between Crassus and a more temperate senator named Gracchus (Charles Laughton). Anthony Mann was the original director of Spartacus, eventually replaced by Stanley Kubrick, who'd previously guided Douglas through Paths of Glory. The film received 4 Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Ustinov. A crucial scene between Olivier and Curtis, removed from the 1967 reissue because of its subtle homosexual implications, was restored in 1991, with a newly recorded soundtrack featuring Curtis as his younger self and Anthony Hopkins standing in for the deceased Olivier.

Kirk Douglas and Laurence Olivier are so good in this film they don't even feel like actors playing a part. They embody their characters so well with the little touches and flourishes, the little inflections, that it's like they really are Spartacus and Crassus.

The amount of acting and range of emotion Kirk Douglas can fit into a single facial expression is mind-boggling.

Three legendary actors of all-time:
Kirk Douglas
Lawrence Olivier
Tony Curtis

I was never a huge fan of Olivier. But he was born to play this role. No actor before or since could play Crassus with such delicious arrogance and command.

Laurence Olivier is one of the greatest actors of all time. He was outstanding in this movie. Legends like Kirk Douglas, Charles Laughton, Tony Curtis and Peter Ustinov all appear in the same movie, yet it is Olivier who dominates the screen in every scene. Just take a look at the scene where he delivers a speech in front of the Roman Army and the senate. What an amazing actor. Icons like Spencer Tracy and Humphrey Bogart even called him the greatest of their time. I would definitely agree.

Absolutely bad ass acting. That facial expression is priceless.

What really annoys Crassus is that Spartacus is not showing him hate here, just utter disregard. That's even worse to an elitist like Crassus. If you hate him, he gains power from it, but if you ignore him, its the worst thing that you can do to him.

So many powerful performances in this film, , and I really hated Crassus, but Olivier played him brilliantly. As did Ustinov, Laughton, Douglas, everybody did a great job.Enjoyed the tense, quiet music in this scene too.

Amazing scene! Spartacus' defiance and contempt, Crassus' patrician arrogance, jealousy and explosion of rage when he slaps his nemesis. All this with North's brilliant music that captures the tension and hatred between the characters. Brilliant!

This was just a brilliant performance by Olivier.

He dominates the movie. He wears that part like a glove.

I think this is one of Oliver's best film performances. As Kirk Douglas once said, very few actors today would have done that scream. They would have said it was over the top. But Olivier had the guts to do it and the technique to pull it all off.

Absolutely! So much for Olivier 'over-acting'. What other actor could command such innate power and authority. His stage performances must have been bloody amazing!

What a good scene, small scale but really powerful. Kubrick really directed this well, with the lighting, camera set ups and the music. And what can you say about Olivier as Crassus? Superb perofrmance. Beautifully thought out and then perfectly executed.

No disrespect to Peter Ustinov, but Laurence Olivier should have won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
