I dated an object I found in an ancient, underground city. It was alright, but I had to pay for dinner and didn't even get a kiss.

Every new culture doesn’t necessarily “remove” what was there before.

The artifacts are exceptional for giving us an idea for when something was made and used and tells us more about who was there.

If something was made “to hide from above” the only historical precedent we have is the Māori when they arrived in New Zealand. There was a Haasts eagle there (believe that was the species) but it could prey on even adults and easily children. That is the ONLY known historical case of a human dealing with aerial predation.

On top of that that place doesn’t look very well “hidden” to me it looks like an EXCELLENT shelter from the heat.

The motive probably wasn't to hide from a danger above, but instead ingenuity on realizing you can stay much cooler underground. 55-65 degrees in many places
