Top Gun Maverick was a MUCH better movie than I anticipated. So much so that I felt I needed to do a theory on it. What are we theorizing about? The enemy of our protagonists. You see, they never actually TELL US who they are fighting. So, I'm going to figure it out for myself! Get ready to SOAR into some secrets!

Matt: "I'm also going to add China"
*Ten seconds later* Also Matt: "We can immediately eliminate China"
Love it 👍

The sweat issue in the original is a legit thing: they’re in the middle of the desert and gov buildings that likely don’t have AC or in the heart of an aircraft carrier in the Pacific Ocean where the functionality of any AC on the boat is definitely questionable.

Fun Fact: There is (or at least was) a hot dog stand in the center of the Pentagon, and was one of the busiest parts of the building. It was so busy that the Soviet Union thought it was the entrance to a secret underground bunker, and as such constantly had an ICBM pointed straight at that one hot dog stand.

I’m really hoping someday we’ll get a theory on how Maverick survived being ejected out of an exploding jet going Mach 10. I’m so certain it shouldn’t be possible but I’d love to have it explained

Fun Fact! The original Top Gun is a movie you will see at least three times a year every year if you are ever stationed on a Naval Aviation base or carrier.

As someone who works in the theaters: I say that normally movies have a falloff period of 3 weeks where numbers go down.

Top Gun had over 2 months before it would even remotely fall off. It’s still going big.

I’m half-Iranian and my first thought after seeing the movie was…”uh yep, that’s Iran all right” glad to know MatPat thinks the same 💀

When I saw the Tomcat, I immediately knew it the Hidden Enemy was Iran.

There's no way Matt isn't on the CIA watch list.

Watched this movie with my parents (we're iranian). When it got to the scene of them explaining the geography and political situation me and my dad looked at each other immediately and said Iran.

0:55 You missed some "too darn sweaty" scenes from the original that would have been really appropriate to make your point: The personnel in the combat information center on the carrier are all sweating profusely, yet they are in spaces on the carrier that are kept VERY cold (no matter the weather outside) to protect all the computers and electronic equipment.

I thought the enemy was Arstotzka from Papers, Please. The insignia on the enemy 5th gen fighters really looked like their flag and the Eastern European setting of the country can match the setting of the movie

As an Iranian og watcher of the channel and some one who keeps up with news, the moment matpat talked about F-14 and the desire to attain nukes; I was %100 sure that it was my homeland. Great video matpat, you explained it very well for people who don't know much about geo-politics & middle eastern countries.

As someone who lives in Washington, watching the final battle was pretty funny. I hike a lot in the area where they filmed, and I could actually recognize some of the peaks and the lake (Lake Kachess). Afterwards, my dad and I joked that the "enemy" was Cascadia- look up Cascadia independence if you aren't familiar. 😆

This movie was the first movie in a long time that feels like a blockbuster. Practical really has a difference

When I saw the Arstotzka symbol I was like “GLORY TO ARSTOTZKA” lol

I had thought Iran was the hidden enemy, not just because of the nuclear facility, but as a kid playing with his toy airplane, my favorite fighter jet: the Tomcat f-14. Iran is the only country on the planet that still has that aircraft in use.

When I first saw the movie, I had my suspicions that it was based on Iran the second I heard "nuclear enrichment facility, " only to seal the deal with the fact that the enemy had F-14s on the front line. Iran is pretty much the only country that currently uses the F-14, so starting with that point would have made this video much shorter. Still, its so nice to see a Top Gun Maverick video, so thanks!

Fun fact, the taco bell used to be at the pentagon but currently its closed. The other restaurants MatPat mentioned are still operating though.

Fun fact for anyone who is unaware. The mission can and would be carried out by 5th gen fighters such as F22 and/or F35. However both of those planes are single seat. Since they had the actors in the Jets literally flying they had to change it to F18s which are 2 seat configuration for obvious reasons
