My 2022 Tesla Model Y Long Range. What I really think - 5 good things, 5 bad things

I've had my Tesla for 2 years, and I have done so much with this car. All day drives the length of the UK. Taken it to fairytale castles and over mountain passes. Along crazy country tracks and dangerous ledges. A family car full of my kids and their stuff. A van for taking large piles of stuff hundreds of miles. And a sports car with lunatic acceleration.

I've learned a lot about this car, about Tesla, and about EVs in the mid 202s. Here is my honest review after 40,000 miles - the good and the bad.

Welcome to Just Get a Tesla, where I do a series of tests and challenges to help show people that instead of shopping around for EVs they should just get a Tesla...

Only someone who has a Tesla as their daily drive can understand what you’re saying. ❤❤❤❤

I bought my MY DM on May 2023. I love this car. Before I drove an Hyundai Ioniq Electric from 2020, that I still have it. The Ioniq is more electric efficient, 12KWh/100km. MY it does 16KWh/100Km. Sorry in Portugal we do not use Imperial measures. 😎.
Another very important thing you did not talked about is the EPA filters. If you go behind a Ace car, no smoke neither no smell comes in the Tesla. The other veichels you have to close the recicling air. Just to mension one very good thing.
A less good thing is the turning curve, it is very bad. In small spaces to turne sometimes is a nightmare, lots of maneuvers...
I like a lot your videos, thanks for sharing.

When you’ve got $300B it really doesn’t matter if voicing your political opinion costs you a few sales. Anyone who chooses not to buy a Tesla because they don’t like Elon’s politics, is shooting themselves in the foot. Why deny yourself the best mass market car ever built.

Another great video Ian and couldn’t agree more about the hopeless automatic wipers, they’re useless, sometimes work when it’s sunny and bright and then sometimes don’t work when it’s tipping it down 🤷‍♂️. Just had my insurance renewal and it’s almost doubled 😳!

Perfect summary of the good and the bad! I’ve been the owner of a MY LR since May 2023 and couldn’t agree more with your findings Ian 😊

Excellent review. Very helpful as I am currently looking to buy a model Y.

I adjust the wipers myself without the auto. No need to take eyes off the road. Memorise the order of; off, auto, 2 intermittent, slow, fast. Hit the wiper button then scroll the settings using left scroll, keeping eyes on road. Easy.

Hi Ian, I agree on most of your good & bad points. I would add this: Bad: the rear seat fold-down cup-holder section in the Y is far too wide compared to the 3. We have both cars and the Y's rear seats become very cramped with the cup-holder section folded down (also makes connecting the rear seat belts extremely hard) so it gets rarely used.

I can confirm that my MY built early 2024 has a good ride for comfort. It is firm but not uncomfortable by a long way.

I think the ride comfort will get better with the next version as well.

Hi Ian, a big one for me, having previously owned an Audi, is the electronic features they stick in their latest cars is years behind say VW, unless you want to pay an extorionate amount. Thius leads to wanting to swap your car every 2 years to get the newer features. They also make it so any updates have to be done at the dealers at a cost of however many hours.
With the Tesla, the RWD has pretty much all the same tech as the LR apart from a few speakers and smaller battery. But, they allow us all to do over the air updates and keep improving the product. The fact you could buy a "faster speed" or add FSDas an extra is a massive plus point.

One more thing: the only car that gave me the Feel Good factor that my 2023 Y/LR gives me was my 1990 Mazda Miata that I had for 30 years. Totally different feeling, , but both are/were pure enjoyment driving around (hah..so a stiff ride doesn't bother me even though I'm in my 70s).

Hi Ian, good video as ever, and some salient points on both the good and bad.

I would absolutely include the supercharging network as a major plus point, its reliability, and the way you roll up, plug in, unplug and drive off without having to mess about with different charging apps, rfid and nfc cards, dongles etc, or even whether you can find a card to pay with to activate things (which your wife just walked off with to order and pay for lunch at the services).

Another plus for me is also the way any issues can be sorted out with service via the app, and a lot of things can be remote diagnosed.

I also like the way Tesla are completely up-front about premium connectivity - Unlike Renault (for example) where it’s Included for 3 years, then it switches off, you lose a bunch of features, and nobody, not even the dealers or importers or Renault in France know how to reactivate it, how much it costs or how you buy it (and the online store that might offer a purchase option has been broken for 4 years to the extent it doesn’t recognise Renault VIN numbers required to register to access it).

On the downside, I really wish they’d made provision under the rear boot floor, to be able to store an emergency wheel (even though they don’t include one). Just space to store one without having to modify the under boot foam with a knife/saw would be nice. I don’t have range anxiety, but I do get a touch nervous about planning a long trip without an option to carry a spare wheel.

It’d be nice if they included the Tesla tyre compressor / repair kit as part of the standard equipment when buying.

I’m looking forward to your performance boost video - it’s something I’ve been thinking of.

I had the luxury of a model 3 in early 2019 from my employer. Since this year I bought a model y from my own money. So I have now more than 5 years of experience with Tesla cars. When I got the model 3 autopilot was far less annoying then it is now, lot have to do with legislation auto assisted driving. Things improved but the nags have become worse. It like a scary boy on Dutch roads, highways are mostly okay. For example it can’t handle road with artificial narrowing lines, about 15% of the edge there is a dotted line, it completely freaks out (breaking, beeping and so) when cars come head on. But it’s still a great car and takes lot of stress away when riding long stretches, it makes sure I take necessary rest stops to get coffee and stretch leg and limbs. Which makes road safer, no driver with hours of driving behind the wheel..So I agree on most of the points, I know it’s hard to have hardware but still not 100% working but it will become available when ready. I think this might also be a plus as no “expensive” retrofit is needed.
Have fun and a Tesla

Just a recent tesla convert having spent years saying they have no spirit and are boring to drive. Standing corrected. It opens up new horizons for a motörhead, such a shame that diehard ICE drivers limit their horizons

4. Warning Alerts
I feel your pain. Frequently
6. I’m 1/2 way around a small roundabout. Someone on the entry lane to my left moves forward slightly. My car slams the brakes on. The driver behind me and I crap ourselves.

Collected my 2022 M3 RWD the same month as your MY. For me the main improvements have been, camera vision when the indicators are used, blind spot/collision warning if indicators are used and a potential collision is detected, matrix headlights, Tesla vision and improvements to the auto wipers - not perfect but significantly better imo.

Have either been a passenger or driven a number of Model Y’s since their introduction to the UK - in latter models the suspension has definitely improved, however, recent tests of the Long Range RWD Y suggest this may have regressed. The M3 Highland is a far more refined car than mine and I would expect the revised MY to introduce similar refinements.

As usual Ian your usual balanced and amusing review. For me the outstanding feature of the MY is its sheer practicality. Looking forward to your 80k review.

I have the 2022 RWD Model Y and I agree with all that except the warning alerts which I don't find an issue, perhaps down to smaller roads in your case. I've had all sorts of cars including some really nice little sporty GTi type models and this is more fun to drive than all of them. I've seen some people describing Tesla as the 'iPhone of EVs' like that's a bad thing, and I suspect they mean it's the 'boring obvious option', but I think it does have that sort of 'just works' feeling about it that I find is the same with Apple products. I'm 14 months and 21k miles into mine and still look forward to every single drive in it and despite doing a pretty high mileage and a lot of longer trips I've never regretted buying the RWD model....250 miles all day long, Summer and Winter.

I feel like my increase in Insurance _alone_ (over a 2007 Corolla) is going to more-than-offset any running-cost savings I'd otherwise accrue. But, doesn't matter. Very excited for Juniper to roll out eventually.

My ID5 wipers and matrix’s head lights are fantastic, the lights work instantly and you can literally see the back spot shadow the vehicle on the other side of the road perfectly. Still want a Tesla though, it will be our next family car.

Great video again Ian. One thing I would add to the GOOD list is the toys, Boombox, Light Show, built in games, Netflix, You Tube etc, etc. On the Bad list Auto Pilot ! My previous car was a Volvo V90 (late 2020) which had pilot assist, the Volvo equivalent of Auto Pilot, which actually worked ! On the Tesla I find that it switches off very easily, if you give slightly too much input, indicate or change lanes it switches off and you have to double tap the drive stalk again to switch it back on. In the Volvo when you indicated to change lanes to overtake on a motorway it would dis-engage and once you were in the other lane re-engage automatically. It worked very well and I used it a lot, but on the Tesla it just feels awkward and a more of a nuisance than an assistance so I dont like to use it. But maybe it will be improved in a future software upgrade.
