No what I’d do as an English teacher would be that I’d have all my students fill a “getting to know you” card. It would include their favorite book/movie and favorite characters from said work. I would use those lists to create assignments.

Every time a student either wouldn’t follow directions or wouldn’t accept a compromise (because we have a stupidly strict time table to stick to) they would get a custom assignment. The custom assignment will be one of the worst fanfics I can find with as many of the student’s favorite characters as possible and they would have to either correct it all (if they need to practice technical skills like punctuation) or write a minimum of one page about why this is or isn’t a well-written fanfic, including proof.

the sad death writing tips thing is soo true though. and if the series is long enough have the person dying be a main character in a previous arc so the audience already feels very attached to that character.

i say this with confidence because i cried for a fucking week after reading a certain death scene
