Disabled Woman Has to Leave Homeless Shelter Every Morning

In the United States, the typical homeless shelter only allows homeless people to stay at night, kicking people out in the morning even in bad or cold weather.

Tammy is disabled and homeless in Denver, Colorado. The homeless shelter where she stays wakes people up at 4:30 am to be out of the building by 6:30 am. Tammy says she is walking "bone on bone." She doesn't have any cartilage in her left knee causing her to fall a lot. Tammy can hardly walk. She cannot work. After exiting the shelter in the morning, she has absolutely nothing to do all day.

Tammy ended up homeless after having surgery. The cost of housing was too much and she ended up in a homeless shelter. When I asked her what she would like people to know about homelessness she responded, "we cannot afford a thousand dollars for an apartment." Tammy continues that people who are elderly or disabled need low-income housing.

Reminds me of my grandmother.
She had both knees replaced, both hips. If she fell, she couldn't get back up. Prayers for her & anyone struggling just to survive.

Why in the world do shelters wake people up at 4.30am, that's not the morning that's the middle of the night! It's just inhumane. This woman should definitely be in housing and recieving SSI.

Legally disabled people should not have problems getting approved. Most are denied for lack of medical records to justify their claim. Homeless people don't have access to printers, copies & faxes let alone medical records.

I know her pain...I couldn't work after I had to have both my knees replaced 4 years ago..because of my many falls, I severely injured my back and hands..if it wasn't for a family member needing dome care and I needing to stay someplace free...I would be out. I wasn't old enough to collect my ssi..so all my work money went for insurance so that I could get care for my health issues..I also have thyroid issues and meds are $$..I feel for tammy and wish that I could help these people..would love to get them all and find a place where we could all live in the country and grow our own food and have animals and live a simple life. ..that's my wishes...
