What happens when autistic kids become adults?

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) August 2014 – Since 1987, the number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder has skyrocketed more than 1,100 percent. Today, we spend $11.5 billion dollars a year on everything from educational programs to medical therapies to help those children.

But what happens when they become adults?

“Unfortunately, they often get lost,” said Dr. Christopher Hanks of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. “For children, the care is fairly structured around them, but as they move into the adult-based care settings, these patients can really struggle and all too often are forgotten,” said Hanks.

In an effort to help those patients, Hanks has opened the Center for Autism Services and Transition (CAST), a new clinic specifically designed to care for adults with autism spectrum disorders.

“We want to provide a place they can come for medical care knowing that we have an entire staff who truly understands their needs,” said Hanks. “Beyond that, we also look for things like continuing education courses or job opportunities to help them transition into a world that can be very intimidating for them,” he said.

As someone with autism (I’m on the much more mild side but still have issues with schooling, etc to give you an idea), I can confirm that we are a tightly weaved community that loves to help each other and see each other grow and thrive. I was in special needs schooling for 3 and a half years, and when you’re in that sort of situation, you feel like a family. Everyone loves each other and we all look out for each other. I’ve since returned to normal schooling and things have been going great, but sometimes I do miss the family feeling I got while at special needs schooling, which is why I’m so grateful that people are dedicated to creating autism resources. I actually live in Columbus and while I myself probably won’t require these, I would definitely consider contributing to them because the more people you have supporting you that understand first hand, really makes a big difference. Just to everyone that does their best to make our lives better: thank you. It truly means the world.

He's so cute. What a good guy!! I bet he came a long way. That's proof and a testament to early intervention and trained teachers

As older parents with an autistic only son, we really worry about what will become of our son after we pass away.

This is fantastic, there really is so little for autistic adults to support independence, it's usually either having a lot of care from professionals & family or just struggling through life unsupported which leaves so many people not able to live a happy healthy life. I also think having autistic teachers & TAs in autistic schools is a really good idea, they can bring in knowledge that no amount of academia could provide.

well from my experience the american ones grow up with trauma from being thrown in locked rooms by special education teachers and a strong resentment for government. But what would i know im only traumatized.
