Paul ty for your valuable imfo, this is jimmy and daisy dog mobile mechanic, my customer had a p0442 code and so since I've literally replaced all his hose during my process of bringing his lexus to life, I followed your advice.wrapped several layers of plastic bags around gas cap and no new code.pulled off cap removed rubber oring cleaned gas tube area and gas cap used synthetic caliper grease generously and seal was incredible.that caliper grease is good as it is synthetic and does not damage rubber!! So ty sir and God bless you and yours this new year 24!

Thank You! The smallest detail overlooked, can be the greatest stumbling block. The gas cap!

I've been starting to have problems with my check engine light. I would often open my gas tank and reclose it to fix the issue. I didn't know what kind of lubricant I needed. This looks like it will work. Thanks for this video!

Outstanding video. I never knew to do this before and have issues with gas caps in the past. Thanks Paul!!

Great video. I never thought about that. It makes a lot of sense. I thought that when your gas cap got old that it would leak fuel vapors and that's what would set off the check engine light. I didn't know about the fuel tank pressure escaping. Thanks Paul.

No one has addressed what the "clicking" function actually does - and in fact if you try to find any info on the net about the anatomy of a modern gas cap - you can't. Why? Because one of the primary failures of the modern day gas cap is the "inner" seal - which is what the click regulates. Manufacturers want to sell new gas caps as often as they can. The outer seal works to control the seal of the cap outer threads that hold the cap in place - so they do not go out of their way to inform people about maintaining gas caps. The "inner" seal works to set the caps "pressure" maximum level - meaning, if the pressure in the tank reaches a certain height, the air can escape. This should normally not happen if the evap system is working - but the function has to be in place as a safety measure. When the inner seal gets dirty and clogged, the cap will not seal - thus the over-pressure regulation is wide-open. The only way to "clean" the inner seal is to remove the cap from the attachment cord and soak it in soap and water - then blow it out with compressed air. Dirt enters the inner portion of the cap through the vent holes you can see at the top of the cap.

I wouldn’t recommend any lubricant on your gas cap gasket. Small amounts of dirt will also cause a leak. The lubricant is going to attract WAY more dirt than if you just cleaned it with 70% isopropyl

My rubber gasket has some cracks in it, I tried some silicone lubricant and its already running better, I orderd the gel online.

Will vasaline work, or electrical grease?

What if the problem is not the gasket? Is the gas cap toast?

my gas cap still doesn't click when I close it after applying the vaseline to the gasket, the lubricant you used in your video costs more than just buying a new gas cap, if the vaseline doesn't work do you think I should just buy a new cap?

When you say Super Lube, can you use Vasoline instead? What other items can serve as a substitute?

Thanks for the great simple common sense explanation and video. One question: to lube the gasket, what kind of household type products could I use? petrolium jelly? WD-40, water-based lubricant? lithium grease, etc? Or would I need the product you used?

Any silicon lubricant will work with rubber.
