This is true but it's not an argument in the free will vs determinism debate. You can't just say we have free will because if you treat people like they don't they find it insulting. That does not prove anything about free will.

We have a will, but it’s not free. Just because a truth is uncomfortable doesn’t mean we should just dispense with it. We can do what we want, we just can’t control what we want. If you can’t control what you want than how can you say your will is free?

You think up what you choose but don't choose what you think.

Gosh no, it's not an insult at all! It is ironically the most 'freeing' information I ever learned! Understanding determinism has freed my from so many burdens like guilt, regret, shame and blame. Very grateful ❤️

It doesn’t matter if it’s uncomfortable. If it’s true free will doesn’t exist then it’s true

Doesn’t make it true though does it. He literally just said people prefer the idea of free will to the idea of determinism as if it was an argument for free will.

Since I was a teen and heard the concert of determinism, 30 year’s ago, for the first time, I was convinced it is the truth! I still find meaning and beauty in my life, but still recognise it’s all determined from the moment time or whatever started everything.
Don’t understand why people can’t or won’t believe it and still can find meaning in life. I feel I have free choices but recognise they’re because of something that happened before, no thought just pop out of nothing, even if it feels that way !!!

the thing about the argument between determinism and free will, and especially why people object to this idea that they arent able to make choices, is that everyone thinks of our conciousness as an actual thing that stays msotly the same as you go about your day. but from what i can tell we are mroe like videos: an illusion of movement and permanence. so dont think of yourself as marbles being pushed around by the falling dominoes of determinism…you ARE the motion of the dominoes falling. does this make any sense? am i just crazy

If you believe there is no free will then You've had an easy life and never had to grind and suffer when you had nothing but will left to survive on

Why would we draw conclusions about philosophical concepts based on what the legal system says? What a stupid argument lol.

Funny enough determinism is central to the arguments behind why we need to reform the criminal justice system to one of rehabilitative justice.

Like the matrix these peoples remained “plugged in” perhaps they should remain that way as suggested it would upset society as a whole. For the betterment of society currently we must allow for these “sacred delusions” to carry on
Machiavellism is justified.

But this is totally mixed up.

We have a conscience to determine our actions or our imagination is a trick of our minds

The legal system (at least in America) has already solved the free will debate. “Free will” defines actions that are voluntary, rather than involuntary. Put a different way, if the action was decided by you, then it is free will.

You’ll notice that this legal definition completely avoids language such as “your actions cannot be predictable before hand” or “there needs to be the possibility choosing differently” or anything like that. Nope. Was the action decided by you, if so that is an exercise of your free will.

Just because there is a cause to our motivations and actions (which determinism is; a process in which everything can be explained as a chain of causality), doesn't mean that we aren't responsible for our actions. We've still committed the act.
