In this special end-of-year episode, we want to try to answer an exciting question for German learners: How long does it actually take to learn German? We asked participants of our Meetup in Berlin exactly that. We also wanted to know which techniques and methods work best and Cari and Erik also have a few learning tips for you.

In dieser besonderen Episode wollen wir zum Jahresende versuchen, eine spannende Frage für Deutschlernende zu beantworten: Wie lange braucht man eigentlich, um Deutsch zu lernen? Wir haben Teilnehmende unseres Meetups in Berlin genau das gefragt. Ich denke, Sprachen lernen dauert das ganze Leben. Englisch ist meine erste Sprache und ich bin 24 Jahre alt, aber ich lerne immer noch neue Englische Wörter und neue Bedeutungen für Wörter, die ich schon kenne. Der Gleiche geht für Deutsch, das habe ich auch seit meine Kindheit gelernt.

Deutsch is wirklich schwer, aber Man kann alles machen wann er etwas möchte.

Je mehr Deutsch ich lerne, desto mehr möchte ich lernen. Es macht mir Spaß, neue Wörter zu lernen, und ich interessiere mich auch sehr für die Geschichte und die Kultur von Deutschland. Ich finde Easy German und Seedland sehr hilfreich beim Lernen.

The best way to learn a language is to listen to people speak.

Native speakers don't need to learn grammar to speak a language and you don't need to too.
Babys learn languages almost automatically by listening a lot. You are smarter than a baby and already have a theory of mind.
A baby has to learn the difference between "thursday" and "tomorrow" the hard way, you can just learn the translations.

But knowing grammar doesn't work. You need to Feel it. Like a baby, surround yourself with speakers. If you can't do it in the real world, do it in the digital one

Ich lerne Deutsch meistens bei den großartigen Easy German Podcast zuhören. Vor 2 Jahren habe ich nur ein bisschen verstanden, aber jetzt verstehe ich das meiste. Wenn ich kann, benutze ich die Vokabelhilfe, die wirklich, wirklich nützlich ist. Es ist so einfach, zuzuhören, während ich andere Dinge mache. Es macht mir wirklich Spaß, Cari und Manuel zuzuhören - sie sind so klug und lustig und nett und interessant - und ich lerne auch so viele andere Dinge von ihnen, wie tech Tipps oder Politik oder wie das Leben in Deutschland ist. Und viele Empfehlungen für dokos oder Lieder etc. Deutsch zu sprechen ist mir sehr schwer, aber ich habe letztes Jahr der 30-Tage-Challenge gemacht und ich habe gemerkt, dass mein Deutsch viel besser war, als ich mich gezwungen habe, zu schreiben und sogar ein bisschen zu sprechen. Ich freue mich darauf, es bald wieder zu tun! Vielen Dank

When I was in high school I did a 10 month study abroad program through Rotary International in Dresden. I arrived having taken two years of German back home and was firmly in the A1 level of comprehension. I was lucky enough to be placed into host families and a Gymnasium that insisted I commit to full immersion. So for 10 months straight I lived, breathed, and dreamed in German all day every day. And I had a personal goal of becoming bilingual, so I opted to only speak English when I had to, which was rare. As a result, I learned at a rapid pace. By the end of the year my host families and friends in Germany school were astounded by how good my conversational German had become. I was probably at B1 by the time I came home, and when I resumed German classes at my high school in the US I jumped straight into AP German and scored very well by the end of that year on the test. My German skills have sort of atrophied over time from not using it, especially conversational German, but I can still read German quite well, and the few times I’ve gone back to visit my command of the language came back quickly. I have met many exchange students here in the US from other countries whose English skills were similarly transformed by full immersion. It’s amazing what you can accomplish in 10 months. 😀

I feel that I understood most of the information here. 🎉🎉 I feel like I am on the way from the beginner's cliff to the intermediate plateau. And that's were I really want to be - I will just binge watch videos in german 24/7 and say that it is productive, and not me just wasting my time.

I started to learn German in January 2007 from 0 and I got my C1 (Goethe Institut) in the middle of July 2007. So, it was and it is possible but you have to be dedicated. 😉

For English nativ or C2 (may be even C1) speakers, it takes around 750 hours to reach fluency, thus if you study 2 hours every day, hypothetically you could reach fluency in almost a year

Respekt vor Sathya, nach 12 (!) Monaten schon so gut und vor allem auch so deutlich zu sprechen. Daumen hoch! Das zeigt aber für mich - neben der Motivation - dass es da eben auch noch eine gewisse natürliche Disposition für das Erlernen von Sprachen gibt, bei dem einen mehr, bei dem anderen weniger.

Ich begann in Mai 2021 Deutsch lernen. Ich benutze am meistens Duolingo. Aber, ich nehme auch in Highschool Deutsch Unterrichten. Jetzt bin ich zwischen A1 und A2 Deutsch. Ich liebe die Sprache und ich will sie verbessern. Vielleicht kann ich eines Tages Deutschland besuchen.

When you are really willing to learn a language, you will have to put the effort in. Not just joining classes, doing homework, but also trying and practising every chance you get.

Deutschkurse haben mir definitiv am meisten geholfen beim Sprachlernprozess. Es ist wichtig, dass man schon von Anfang an an die Grammatik arbeitet, wie im Video hingewiesen wurde. Sobald man eine gute Grundlage hat, kann man dann relativ schneller und leichter neues Wortschatz lernen. Am B2-Niveau habe ich nun schon damit angefangen, meinen ersten deutschen Roman zu lesen, und das macht mir so viel Spaß!

hello, i have just decided to visit germany for christmas in 2024 so have literally just looked at this for the first time today, i have never been to europe, never mind germally, looking at the language it is gonna be daunting, but because of my job i dont have a lot of time either, but going to give it my best shot and at least learn something if i can. i love your video, and really looking forward to visiting in december next year.

Danke Easy German. Ich finde eure Channel sehr behilfreich. Ich hab damals sehr oft mit meiner Eltern Deutsch gesprochen aber mit der Zeit im Ausland habe ich viele Worter und ganz besonders die Grammatik vergessen. Jetzt habe ich die Interesse zurück in der Heimart umzuziehen und wieder meine Kenntnisse durch eure Videos und Übungen wieder zu "beleben" hehe.
