pro tip: if you have a mouse with side buttons you can use them to shift up and down

Tip for controller users : Bind your right joystick to the clutch instead of the camera and configure it so that the deadzone goes from the center to all the way up (by default the deadzone will be from all the way down to up - center will be 50% clutch - bad). With Steam Input you can configure your controller even more so that when you're holding one button the right joystick gets mapped to another key, useful if you still want camera controls ("Mode Shift" - look up some guides) You don't really have a lot of "range" but its WAY better than on/off.

Yea, mechanics are very close to real life. I have used BeamNG to get used to manual before my 1st driving lesson ( I have chosen to learn and get my license in manual) and that helped a lot. Also I have used both sim and real life video guides since they are more or less the same.
One should keep in mind that manual in BeamNG is way more forgiving then in real life, much harder to stall. However, in real life its much harder to shift into the wrong gear since feedback from the gearbox is significant.

Casually playing beamng for about 2 years most of the time without a shifter, wheel and pedal setup, for manuals I go exactly as showed just inverted LT for clutch to get a more realistic bite point and and RB for brakes at the expense of being uncontrollable on/off brakes in most situations unless ABS is enabled.

Engine breaking may not be as effective in carbureted cars as the carb is always adding fuel proportional to the air entering (which isnt much since the throttle plate is almost closed). Fuel injected cars can actually completely cut fuel during engine breaking and are much more efficient at engine breaking. There may be a certain rev range where it is more fuel efficient in carbed cars to stay at idle and use the brakes vs being high in the revs engine braking. Of course using the engine as brakes is going to be much better on your rotors but im talking from a fuel saving perspective only.

I would say the Autobello Piccolina is easier to drive in manual than the Covet because the bite point is lower but the Covet is more like other cars in terms of shifting. Awesome Video.

how i do hill starting:
Slowly release the clutch, but not completely. There is a moment where the cars front starts to drive, and then i let go off the brake. If done correctly the car doesnt roll back and you can add gas like usually

Precision : In France, our driving test include fuel efficiency and all that, shift up when you hit 2K5 or 3K rev, stop at the right timing with the clutch to save too.

Also keep in mind that not all transmissions can be shifted super fast. It takes some time to move the gear lever from one position to the other, and BeamNG actually takes this into account. Particularly on old cars and commercial vehicles shifting too fast may damage the synchros. If that happens try to move your shifter a bit slower next time. If you use buttons to shift, hold them down a bit before releasing them.
