Monitor & TV Refresh Rates as Fast As Possible

Refresh rates can be confusing, especially when we get into the question of "how fast of a refresh rate do we really need". Hopefully this helps!

Only an idiot would believe 24 fps is the most a human could see.

Why did the peasant look up into the sky?
To achieve a stable 30fps!

I personally prefer 0-0.5 fps for my games. In fact, if they could just make every game a powerpoint presentation i'd be so happy. Anything above 1fps gives me headaches and hurts my brain, even though the human eye can't see above 1fps.

As for the eyes, no they don't see in frames per second. They see a continuous stream of picture, but they also work similarly to a camera's shutter in that at any given moment, the image on the retina will contain visual information from the last several milliseconds. For most people this will be longer than 16ms, meaning frame rates higher than 60fps will offer no improved motion information for most human eyes, given that they have proper motion blur. If motion blur is disabled, then the human eye will see improvements potentially up to several thousand fps, but that's just because the eye is simulating that motion blur itself.

In games motion blur is usually fucking nauseating unless done well enough.

What I learned from this video: Linus pronounces "GIF" wrong, and likes Kraft Dinner.

I'm pretty sure no one would get offended by that image since most people who watch this stuff are pc gamers.

I was a console gamer for many years growing up. I was used to not having options and with the 360 almost all games came in 30fps. I didn't complain because I never got to experience it at 60hz until I built my pc and had a 1080p monitor to play it with. True 1080 looked much better and felt very smooth in 60hz, same game, same engine. Then I got a 144hz monitor. Same game, same engine, but now I literally can not pick out a frame. I'm certain that if I actually turned motion blur on, it would feel like a higher hz rate but only just. After a few weeks with 144hz, I went back to 60 just to try it and it felt like 30hz back when I was used to 60hz. However, I can confirm that is not a bad thing.

I had a friend who, at this point in time, just got the PS4. I had him do a blind test going between 30 to 60. Then from 60 to 90 to 120 to 144. He was able to clearly identify from 30 and 60 with zero mistakes. the 60, 90, 120, 144 test he only made a mistake with 120 saying it was 144. The rest was all on the spot. So do not say you can't tell the difference.

As a matter of fact, math says that if our brains can process our fastest measuring rate (the millisecond, or ms) of 1ms, then we should be able to see a difference between 144hz and 480hz. However, this is no monitor that is 480hz for someone to test this theory. I do believe though that 144hz is a good refresh rate as it is very hard to render past this with good image quality. Right now, the most I can get on a game in 4K resolution is 78fps average in CS:GO on my GTX970 with Core i7-4770k (not sure the Ghz anymore, I need to check my bios settings). 60fps is playable for me but I really struggle to play more than 20 minutes at 30fps.

So in conclusion, 60hz is minimal, 120-144hz is optimal, 480hz+ is tits

P.S. They ruined battlefield!

Higher is definitely better, and this is a severe drawback and disadvantage with current consoles. I am curious as to what the "upper limit" is in gaming applications though. I can't bare less than 60fps now that I'm used to it, and 120fps is glorious with a matching 120Hz monitor (wish I owned that kind of setup myself). But I know that 144Hz is popular too. So.. how much further can it go?
