We grew up with textbooks on our heads to "protect" us from nuclear bombs, and that song "Sticks & stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me". We are the last generation where fist-fights in school earned you a whipping from the principal with a wooden paddle that had holes in it.

Once I was driving to work in a snowstorm ( was on call emergency service in IT ) I skidded off the road going uphill... spun 360, ... got out the car, to (catch my bearings) ... shook it off.


then got in the car, later skidded DOWNHILL, after doing another 360, scrapped a tree. Old lady came running out the house to help me, (my head as cut, bleeding -I still have the scar) . I thanked her for her concern... still made it to work


...ON TIME!

The level of cruelty in a typical GenX conversation between friends, would start wars today.

We roamed the towns on our bicycles without restraint. We spent the night in the house that was abandoned for being haunted. We rode on passing trains, ran from police, built forts out of old pallets behind the abandoned rail yard. We climbed trees, swam in creeks, passed around heavy metal bootlegs, shot bottles with pellet rifles, and we all, always, carried pocket knives. We were the last normal, free, wild, and adventurous generation. X is the last of the best of America.

My mum drive through a round about really fast when I was 6. Of course I was in the front seat with no seat belt and I had not closed the Chargers door properly with my weak little 6 year old arms. Long story short, the door swung open and I fell out. Anyway, I remember two things about that day. 1. Waking up in the gutter with my mum grabbing me by the elbow and chucking me back in the front seat of the car. 2. When I got home I got the belt for playing with the door. No doctors, no sympathy. All Gen X.
