Why Are GEN-X'ers The Way They Are?

We GEN-X'ers are an elusive bunch. There's a reason why they call us the "Silent Generation", but it's not for the reasons you typically hear. It's not because we are a bunch of slackers who just don't give a damn about anything. In fact, the opposite is true.

So in this video I'll go over three secrets that are obvious to us but that it seems the younger generation just can't seem to figure out. Consider this my PSA for all those out there trying to figure out all us brooding and moody GEN-X'ers.

SPOILER ALERT: We aren't brooding and moody.

Gen-X doesn't understand why younger generations on the one hand and older generations on the other want to tell each other how to live, because when we were growing up nobody seemed to give a shit WHAT we did. We grew up in a Mad Max movie.

I think the biggest thing about gen X is we grew up completely aware that we are not the main character and life doesnt revovle around us. We have no sense of entitlement. We dont think the world or anyone in it owes us anything.

I remember that someone told me long ago back in the 80's that the X stands for "Whatever" because we really didn't care.

We were taught how to handle disappointment and keep our composure. Flailing around, crying, breaking stuff would be met with a leather belt... to give you something to really cry about.

One of my friends who also grew up in the middle of nowhere ran away from home for three days while on summer break. When he went home and walked in he asked if they had given up looking for him. The response was “ we had no idea you had gone anywhere”.

Mister Rogers and Big Bird taught us how to treat our friends. Bugs Bunny and the Roadrunner taught us how to handle enemies. MacGyver was a role model and those damn ABC Afterschool Specials convinced us we were all destined to be on a milk carton or on drugs if we trusted anyone outside our group of friends. I'm one of the first born Gen-X-ers. The one thing we learned as our parents threw us out into the world to figure s*** out for ourselves was we learned to work with each other and help each other out. We trust very little people only those within our circle. Till this day I still have friends from childhood we're still very close friends. We prefer to hang out with our own generation we have a lot in common. We are silent we like our solitude but don't let that fool you we are watching, paying attention, we're listening and know everything that is going on.

We grew up outside, in the streets. As soon as we got home from school we were outside running. climbing, swimming, jumping off roofs, gettimg dirty and scraped up. We made friendseverywhere we went. We were happy alone or hanging out with others. AND age didnt matter. If you were a kid and you could run and talk you were in. Boy, girl didnt matter. We dont ask for help bevause we grew up in a time where if you wanted something done n there was nobody around to help you just figured out a way on how to do it yourself. We were raised by cartoons, tv shows, arcades and music. ROCK ON Xers!

I think for those of us Xers that were raised by counter-culture boomers, they told us not be "conformists"... but when we took this message to heart, those boomers were shocked that we weren't conforming to their ideals. Consequently, I think one point you missed is that Gen-Xers are inherently resistant to comformity

i don't remember where i read this, but Gen X has the highest percentage of military members in relation to our generation size. gen x went through the panama invasion to kick noriega out, 2 gulf wars, afghanistan, syria, somalia, the late 80s persian gulf taker escorts, finished out the cold war. we were smack dab in the middle of the drug war and aids pandemic. sure the boomers had vietnam, the oil embargo, watergate, and kennedy. the civil rights movement and campus riots. we learned from the boomers that not a darn thing made a difference except don't trust the government of from either party.

Gen-X did the same stunts Evil Knievil did and we added our own touches to it. We were literally "Lord of the Flies" kids. We did so many stupid things for clout but we didn't break the law to do it. We always arrived to one up each other for bragging rights. We invented video games but we still went outside and played. We paved the way for Internet and social media and yes we do use it but we have one thing kids don't have these days. We have scars of a life lived in the wild. We were wild children. And we're still wild. Our bodies are paying for the hard lives we lived but we lived it on our terms and will still outdo newer generations.

Born in '78. Gen X isn't the "Lost Generation" as so many call it. We're the one who just got on with life because we learned early on that life owes you nothing. You gotta make your own way. So, instead of crying about how "unfair" it is, we just went ahead and did the damn thing.
