Mounting research shows that there is no magic bullet to treat heart disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, allergies, digestive disorders, headaches, fatigue, or any of the myriad problems we suffer from in the 21st century.

But increasing evidence also shows us something else. It shows that food is the most powerful “drug” we have not just to prevent, but also treat, cure, and reverse most chronic illnesses. Food contains information that speaks to our genes, not just calories for energy.

In this video, I talk about how the food you eat programs your body with messages of health or illness. We are learning from research in the field of nutrigenomics, that food “talks” to our DNA switching on or off genes that lead to health or disease.

I'm also joined by Dr. William Li to talk about using the medicinal power of food to help reverse disease, regeneration, and much more.

Dr. William Li is an internationally renowned physician, scientist and author of one of my favorite books, the New York Times bestseller Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself. His groundbreaking work has led to the development of more than 30 new medical treatments and impacted care for more than 70 diseases including cancer, diabetes, blindness, heart disease and obesity. His TED Talk, “Can We Eat to Starve Cancer?” has garnered more than 11 million views. Dr. Li has appeared on Good Morning America, CNN, CNBC, Live with Kelly & Ryan and the Dr. Oz Show, and he has been featured in USA Today, Time Magazine, The Atlantic, Parade and O Magazine. He is president and medical director of the Angiogenesis Foundation and is leading research into COVID-19.

When I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 20 years, my doctor said I'd be in a wheelchair within 15 years. I ended up changing my diet and lifestyle and while I still have the odd relapse from time to time, I'm feeling pretty great for having turned 47 this year and living with MS for this long. I'm convinced that eating healthy and the right mindset is a very powerful combination.

I’m seeing functional medicine doc now and also receiving acupuncture. He put me on elimination diet since mid June and my inflammation is gone in joints and I lost 15 pounds without hunger. I’m learning so much from your videos and my doc agrees with most of what I tell him I learned from you. I’m convinced our diet is the key to our pain and disease.

This is a good example of why nutritional science is so confusing. The guest at around 31:12 states that a high fat diet is bad for you and bad for angiogenesis. When Dr. Hyman probes a bit further, turns out he is citing research on mice with genetic hypercholesteremia. Not exactly the same thing as someone eating good fats from nuts, avocados, and grass-fed beef.

Perhaps why Anorexia Nervosa has the highest fatality rate of all mental illnesses (it’s a physical illness too) is in part because the greatest drug to cure the mind and body is: food. Yet, the prognosis of Anorexia is built on the notion of food restriction, into starvation. So, then people with anorexia get more mental disorders, gut disorders, heart and other organ issues including POTS. I’d be interested in your approach and what that would be for someone with Anorexia?

You are truly a very beautiful man and I admire your passion In what you do. I have rheumatoid arthritis. I've switched up everything in my life and what I eat and I do exercise but I'm not sure what's happened lately. My inflammation has returned. Not sure what to do now.

Your guest says "we know that polyunsaturated fat is good" - I'm curious to know what the scientific evidence he is basing this on?
Does he mean we should follow Ancel Keys based advice and consume seed oils primarily and avoid all saturated fats?
How does it tie in with recommending cacao, Mediterranean diet which have almost no polyunsaturated fats but mainly monounsaturated and saturated fats?
Thank you again for the podcast.

Dr. Hyman always talks about not eating sugar and starch. Are sweet potatoes ok? I just started trying to eat healthier and I’m eating 2 small/medium sweet potatoes daily. Is this bad?
