So after a quick search for where to buy potassium nitrate, I'm pretty sure I'm now on several lists...

A couple of notes regarding this demonstration: The combination of potassium nitrate and sugar results in a highly flammable mixture. Notice that I only make a small amount (less than 10 grams). If the material is overheated, it can ignite within the pan. Also, when burning a sample, I used a fume hood with fire extinguishers nearby and proper ppe. Long story short, while the combination is simple, it is a dangerous reaction once ignited, and should only be done by professionals.

If you have the time do it this way: Dissolve the kno3 and sugar into water completely, use too much water if you need to. Then carefully bring it just over the boiling point of water (220-250 degrees f), being careful not to get to hot and start caramelizing the sugar. After most of the water is boiled off, what is left should be pure white. Pour it into a baking pan on some wax paper and let it cool and harden. Break it up as much as you can. It will still be sticky and have too much water. Put it in the oven at 250 degrees and let more water cook off. If you live somewhere with lots of sun, you could also just leave it out on a hot day for a few hours. Once it is very dry and brittle you can break it down back into a powder. Now the kno3 and sugar are bonded very tightly and evenly distributed and have a very high surface area when granulated. I get my best burns with this method though it takes time.

Best to do it in a double boiler. Tried it this way 65 years ago on my mothers stove. Insurance paid for new stove, vinyl flooring and repainting. I was only grounded for a couple of weeks.😂

I mixed up saltpeter (potassium nitrate) and sugar 1:1 by volume and used to cut a small slit in old tennis ball, just big enough to get the tip of a small funnel in. The I would fill up the ball, insert a 3" length of fuse in the slit, and then light it and roll the ball down the street. When the mix ignited, the ball would take off like it was possessed. I miss the 70s, living out in the country.

Improvised smoke flair. I made one as a kid and if made right it makes a tall narrow column of smoke over 4 stories high.

For everyone wondering: sucrose is just sugar, and potassium nitrate can be bought at places like Lowe’s and Home Depot, in a product called stump remover. Be advised, the chemical Potassium Nitrate (the one needed to make the sugar rocket) is a flame oxidizer, which accelerates flames. Also, the gases produced from the reaction can be hazardous, so be careful when igniting the sugar rocket near others.

Edit: please do not blow up your house, follow what the original video creator said about safety!
