In this video, I explore the different types of emotional eating, categorizing them into three areas: pleasure, pain, and purity. While emotional eating is often viewed negatively, I believe it’s natural and something many people do occasionally. However, it can become problematic when used as a primary tool to cope with emotional needs. By identifying which type of emotional eating resonates with you, you can better understand the underlying needs or emotions you're attempting to address through food.

Starting with pleasure-driven emotional eating, this often involves using food to create a sense of enjoyment or comfort, whether through special occasions or as a source of daily comfort when life lacks other pleasures. On the other hand, pain-based emotional eating is about avoiding discomfort, using food to soothe, numb, or even dissociate from difficult emotions. Finally, purity-related emotional eating involves using food to maintain a sense of control or self-worth, where eating becomes intertwined with self-esteem, sometimes leading to restrictive or rigid eating habits.

I share my experiences as a psychotherapist, highlighting the importance of recognizing the feelings behind emotional eating and reframing our relationship with food. Addressing our emotions and self-acceptance can help shift patterns with food, making lasting behavioral change possible. My work includes individual and group therapy, and I offer online resources for those wanting support with food and emotional health. If you're interested in exploring this journey, check the description for more details about my services. Thanks for watching, and I look forward to seeing you in the next video!

6:26 So good: "[My work has been] on my relationship with myself and self-acceptance. That came from not a, 'I'm good enough.' It actually came from, 'Maybe there's part of me that's never going to feel good enough. Maybe I'm always going to feel like I'm never quite reaching my potential and that's okay.' I don't have to tell myself, 'I'm doing my best I can.' I tell myself, 'Sometimes maybe I'm not doing my best and that's okay.' I think so many of us are in that trap where we feel like there is a better version of ourselves just around the corner that we're trying to get to. 'When I've done this, when I'm more like this...then I'll feel okay about myself.' [Instead, ] I think there's something to embracing the flaws and the messiness of even having to be a human being on this planet."

I just lost the cat that I owned for 12 years. He was 17. Your little one is absolutely adorable and of course I love your videos.

I thought I've read and heard everything that I possibly could about this topic but this was so very insightful. You really have the capacity to turn these bits of knowledge and experience into something that resonates on a whole new level, even for those of us who might already theoretically know these things. Thank you so much, your work is invaluable ❤️

Thankyou so much. This hit me so deeply. I hope you can do some more with us about these last 2 especially. Counselling through a psychologist has not been helping me at all, but you are reaching me. Thankyou so much. You are using your life experience, pain and the strategies in such a POSITIVE and KIND way to HELP others in their suffering and struggles.❤ Thankyou ❤️ you are beautiful inside and out.❤

Congrats on the new addition, Sarah! Another great topic, thank you. Also, I heard someone discussing his eating issues with Joe Dispenza, and he asked Joe if he thought he was addicted to food, and Joe’s response was “I think you’re addicted to feeling guilty.” That hit me as very much in line with your principles.

Big emotions, that's me. I got shamed for them when I was a child, told I was too sensitive. Thank you for this. I'm struggling at the moment with dark thoughts and my eating. Must be the light going. BTW kitties make everything better but they are ninja assassins until they calm down a bit 😂😂😂

So wonderful to hear a therapist say I may never fully feel completely "ok" & that's ok & I accept that.

Wow purity rings the most true for me. I feel like pleasure or pain are always in the background as a secondary reason for emotional eating.
