1. Make a plan: reference colours, techniques required and ordering of colours for layering. Test these before doing them on your drawing
2. Overly worrying about the perfect colours. Focus on values instead of hue/shade.
3. Using the incorrect supplies. Pick the right paper for your pencils - see her coloured pencil guide.
4. Lighting in your workspace. Warm yellow light causes you to use cooler tones which look wrong in other light tones. Use a daylight bulb.
5. Having the wrong mindset. Coloured pencil is a slow process, rushing makes it more likely you will make mistakes.

I've been practicing my drawing nearly every day for a little over a year now, and I think that the main thing people forget that affects their drawings is that they need to practice first. No art tutorial on Youtube can give you practice. It can give you the right techniques to use, but you NEED to practice those techniques to become good at it. If everyone practiced art, a whole lot more people wouldn't be saying that they can hardly draw a straight line.

Yes, I'm very guilty of some of them. Coloured pencil... Well, let's just say we don't really like each other. I bought a big set of really expensive pencils and every time I use them I find the result far from what I hoped for, making me therefore hesitant to use them in the first place. But I do wanna continue and try with pencils, so instead, I bought a twelve-pack with somewhat cheaper pencils and am going to force myself to use those, putting the expensive once to the side for a while.

i was so much better at coloured pencil work when i was about 15 yrs old. now, the light source is probably the biggest problem, closely followed by rushing. thanks kirsty, lovely tute x

Lighting has ALWAYS been the bane of my existence. So freaking annoying. It hasn't been until very recently that I could go and fix that issue. Most of the lighting I have ever had in my homes has been yellowish and or the rooms have been to dark.
