For me, rushing has always been an aspect of underconfidence. Partly, that came from trying difficult tasks without the best supplies. If you don't know you're going to be successful, then it's very hard to convince yourself to stay in the game. But perhaps once that feeling sets in we shouldn't. The phase of rushing when you're at your limit may really be just par for the course and an aspect of the learning process. There's definitely a lot more to be salvaged from messing it all up than leaving things half finished or banging your head against it.
