Why is alcohol bad for kings?

In this devotional, I share three thoughts from Proverbs 31:4-7.

1. Forgotten decrees.

2. Perverted rights.

3. Reducing misery.

These thoughts come from assigned reading - Proverbs 31. If you would like to read through the Bible with me you can do so by joining the Facebook group Through the Bible.

The detrimental results of alcohol abuse are significantly serious to consider abstinence.

From verses 1 to 9, the entire section protests kings and individuals responsible for consuming strong drinks. The warning is:

*". . . it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: Lest they drink and forget the law and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted"* (Verses 4, 5).

The chapter urges the king to address the causes of the poor and needy. Rather than promoting the use of alcohol, the inspired writer suggests that those in health and strength should renounce it.

*Strong drink was to be reserved only for use as medicine for someone who is terminally ill, "ready to perish."*

In Biblical times, when pain-killing drugs were not available, strong drinks were also used to treat manic depression. To be clear, the Bible teaches people to renounce it when in health, strength, and prosperity.

Correction: Let those who are dying have strong drinks.
