and before the “as a ___, I’m miserable!” comments — it’s just general! There are happy & miserable folks in every job lol

Notice how perceived job security plays a giant factor in job satisfaction? Union jobs, stable jobs.

All of them feel needed and see direct results for the work they put in.

Psychotherapist here. I have a private practice and I love my work. Like, really love. I was diagnosed with Stage 3b breast cancer and didn't miss a session. But, I don't make a ton of money because I offer a sliding scale fee so as to reduce barriers to mental health care.

What these three types of jobs have in common in PURPOSE. They add meaning to your life and value to the lives of others. Let’s not underestimate the power of true purpose in our lives and what it feels like to be of good service to the world around us.

Ecology/biology jobs that involve outdoor field work have to be pretty high on the list, too. I haven't met anyone that does it and doesn't love it.

I totally agree! I’m an audiologist and I feel that fits in your second category, I work for a privately owned practice, my boss is amazing, there’s only 8 employees total and he genuinely cares about us and we genuinely care about our patients, it is so fulfilling

Glad you specified federal govt and not just govt in general. I don't work in government myself but many of my friends do and there's definitely a big difference in happiness level between working for federal govt and working for state/local govt. From my small sample pool of friends in state/local they are all miserable and hate their jobs mostly because the pay is crap and the tech is extremely outdated but they stay anyway because of the benefits and low hours.

Just some ideas you might notice:

What careers are second careers the most? And what careers do people seem to switch from?

What are the lowest paying jobs that people actually got degrees for?

Do you find it’s common that people are in different careers than their degrees?

Thank you for your excellent content. “You got this!” ❤

My dad works as a computer programmer for the DoD and could not be happier. His hours are flexible enough that he's always home by the time my little sister gets out of school even though he works 10 hour days. He gets great benefits and makes good money, and the job security is incredible. He's so much happier here than he would be anywhere else.

Medical imaging is so underrated, 2-4 years of school, 1/2 is on the job training, and you start at $60-70K with the knowledge you will be making close to if not more than $100K/year when you retire

Not in this top 3 but just thought I’d share: I’m a lorry driver in the UK and love my job.

I have a degree but found that lorry driving can compete very well in terms of pay and even in terms of work/life balance with graduate jobs because of how strictly regulated lorry driving is in the UK. Also I love being out and about and physically active and today drove along both a gorgeous coastline and through rolling hills today. No job’s perfect but it’s always a good sign when after having a 10+ hour work day for whatever reason (not all my days are that long) you find yourself thinking “you know what? As far as a 10-14 hour day goes, this hasn’t been that bad”.

I’ve worked in the service industry for 30 years, and been trying to leave for 15. I had hoped college would be my out, but I ended up with a lot of debt, but a great experience. So now I’m getting my CDLA license. I’m absolving it! And I can take my dogs with me out on the truck!

I think for number 2, health-adjacent jobs are probably better than direct health jobs because you’re not seeing clients die or be in life threatening situations as much
