GRIP PRESSURE - LOOSE or TIGHT? (With Proof)

Throughout the years grip pressure has been one of those things that has not been clarified. Should your grip pressure be loose or tight? Although common wisdom says it should be loose (like you are holding a baby bird or a tube of toothpaste with no cap) I would disagree.

Sure, your grip pressure would be this light when you set up but if you try to hit a ball with a grip pressure this loose it will cause you serious distance loss. Likewise holding on too tight with lock your wrists throughout your swing. To prove the correct grip pressure I hit shots with a "Smart Grip" on a 7 iron. This grip beeps when you put pressure on the grip so it will prove if you should be loose or tight as you grip the club.

How loose or tight you should be holding onto the club seriously affects your contact and most golfers get this wrong. Understanding the correct grip pressure can seriously take your game to a whole new level hitting pure irons and gaining a ton of distance.

“As you go back, you need to kill the bird.” 😂😂😂😂. I love it! 🙌🏾

Thanks for dispelling the light “baby bird” myth and clarifying that we need a firm grip and loose wrists.

I remember paying for some golf lessons, and the instructor tried to pull the club from my hands - he said if he couldn't pull it away, I was holding the club too tightly. Needless to say, those lessons didn't help me improve much. Thank you for clarifying the golf grip pressure question Paul!

Paul thank you so very much for this video. The grip pressure finally makes sense. You have my vote for teacher of the year.

Have definitely seen a massive improvement with my ball striking and much straighter sometimes slight draw shots just by starting with the lighter grip pressure. I did this after watching one of your other previous clips on the same topic using the baseball bat swing analogy. Fantastic stuff Paul, never get tired of watching your content, thanks, Alan, from Edinburgh

Brilliant instructing. I can tell what sets you apart from the other lessons on youtube, because you give so much clarity

I was just talking about this to my daughter last night (college frosh, she's struggling with her grip since her new coach is trying to change it). We really enjoy your videos!

This was a critical lesson for me. I’m 2 weeks into the Body Swing program, hitting the ball further with less effort but with inconsistent accuracy. I erroneously equated loose wrists with loose grip. Now with a firm grip, yardage has increased by 10 and most shots are straight with compression and even a slight draw. Thank you Paul!

Dude, this video changed everything for me. I tried everything for better contact and it seems to have been not letting my wrists flow as described in the video. THANK YOU!

Paul, I played 9 this morning. Firm grip, WD-40 on the “hinges”… missed 1 fairway, missed 2 greens. 1 under! Body swing, body swing, body swing! Easy on the body( 70 year old here), and surprisingly loooong👍🏽
I notice that you appear to have a more down hand path as you uncoil, more inside of the backswing hand path. I did this today and it was super effective! Thank you Paul! 👍🏽

You are officially my new Golf Coach/Instructor. Working on wrist drills yesterday and hopefully some swinging stuff today....love this swing!

I think grip pressure is one of the most looked over aspects of the golf swing. I first read about the baby bird when I read Jack Nicholas’s book golf like me. No one has said kill the bird until I watched your video.

I actually got 2 lessons out of this. @2:39, the swing examples on the side really helped me see your full swing. Seeing when you engage your downswing during your hip turn. The slow mo really helped! Great video

Brother, this advice is crazy helpful. Every year I start the season hitting the ball great. Then I hear someone mention lightening the grip pressure and all of a sudden I can’t get the face closed.

Thank you I found that firm grip helped more with my driver slicing. Way more consistant now with all clubs.

I am someone who lets go of the club and have never been able to find a way to fix it consistently. I have YouTubed for a fix for it and never have found it. I have even taken lessons! Can’t wait to try this out. Thank you

I tell doubters that golf is the Western equivalent of an Eastern martial art (and since I found you online, you are sort of the Zen master!). Thanks for all the videos. For someone like me, an abstract thinker who is much more mechanical than visual or “feely” when I play, I am learning so much from you. I especially appreciate how you so often describe what is too much or too little of a particular movement, look or feel. Thanks so much, Paul!

This was my problem. Fatting shots thinning shots. Changing my swing like 10 times. Then one day I got pissed and applied more pressure to my grip. Cleanest crisp shot I’ve ever hit. You can’t drive a nail in wood with holding the hammer super light. It has changed my game.
