And these are the elements of the 25th Imperial Guard unit, tasked with the protection of our fine vessel. They are also quite bored from not pound ground for so long.

I really love and enjoy the stories that are clearly 40k inspired. But without the Xenophobia. Good times.

May be a 40k style over scaled ship, but for once they didn't say Tera lol. Plus, I don't think 40k drop ships use winged craft or negotiate with aliens lol

They were given a chance, they failed to take it... What happened after that is all on them

Erm... Why are people surprised by exploration ships being armed? You look at all the early exploration ships and they were ALL armed, many were warships, admittedly usually small warships, but still warships. In our own history unarmed exploration vessels are a NEW thing.

As for size, admittedly 15 km is a bit large, but size for an exploration ship in deep space makes sense. Voyage times are likely to be very long, so you need room for many different things, including but not limited to:

1) Supplies, including but not limited to, food, clothing, fuel, spare parts, raw materials to machine spare parts, ammunition, weapons and so on.

2) People, its space exploration, and you need to do as much as possible on a single hull. So that means you need ship crew, scientific crew in a multitude of fields, security, pilots for smaller parasite craft (such as shuttles) and so on.

3) Quarters and facilities for said people. Again as I said, long voyage times, potentially years long, which means you need to keep morale and health up, which means more room for the crew, better quarters than you would find in a Navy vessel for example which may only see 6 - 12 month deployments. You also need facilities to keep them healthy mentally and physically, including various recreational areas like gyms, library, social eating areas and so on.

4) Defence, well our own history has many examples of Explorers being attacked and killed by natives. Sure in many cases so their own fault, but in others not so much.

All these things require space, and then you have the power plants, the drives, the environmental systems and so on....

I actually would not be surprised if in the way away future Space Exploration ships actually end up being pretty damned big, potentially bigger than warships even if significantly less heavily

Quantity is a quality all its own.

these xenos are going to find out the hard way how many humans it takes to rip them apart.

A better translation might be "force recon"

I do prefer "Terra" or "Terran" as "Terra" reffers to the earth itself where as "Gaia" refferes to a spiritual concept of the earth as a god/goddes and/or mother figure for all humans or all life on earth.
But other than that it was a good one.

And here I was hoping you’d start narrating first contact, not first contact. But, you’d burn yourself out too, I guess. Cause that’s a lot of reading.
