I love it when these stories take a positive turn. Sure, humanity triumphing over every obstacle in their path stories are great, but paternal!humanity is a great subgenre too.

When you come from a dry, desert, planet where water is scarce, seeing a waterfall must be astounding. You may be seeing more water there than there is on your whole planet. And, it's just there tumultuously flowing in the open.

This is one of those great examples where the story completely obviously sets you up for the ending, but it's so enjoyable you follow along without complaining about it being too obvious - it's just too enjoyable to complain.

I strongly dislike any HFY story in which the aliens are mostly awful people, because it's too easy to be awesome if everyone else sucks.

the best HFY stories are when humans, new to the galactic stage, prove their worth and save a galaxy with a good number of worthy alien civilizations in it.

If there is 1 thing I like about these types of stories, and scenarios. Are the fact that, they make humanity out to be something we are not. However, it is something we inspire to be one day, someday, hopefully soon... even though it's never meant to be.
