The Honda D-series engine is a fantastic engine. If you're buy your first classic Honda. You don't need to engine swap it. The D-Series is fantastic. It is durable. It revs like it has DOHC. It sounds FANTASTIC!

It's great because it's bulletproof

People who oftentimes say "money cant buy happiness" are the ones who haven't owned an early 90s stick shift honda.

indeed. Had a D series 2000 civic and it gave me zero issues, supremely reliable.

It was bulletproof until 2000. The 2001-2005 1.7l was delicate (by D series standards, still solid.)

Got an '89 Civic. It's my first car and I've had her for 17 years now. Engine is bulletproof with proper maintaince.

This is the Honda equivalent of the 305 SBC, overshadowed by its big brother, but still solid.

My 2nd Honda was a 91 civic. Same color as this one, same engine. So simple. I loved working on it.

I know a guy with a Civic with a D series and he’s waiting for it to blow up to swap in a B series. I think he’s gonna be waiting a long time.

my friend had an 80s civic (the super boxy one) with a D series. He would run that thing without coolant and oil but it never quit. Quite impressive.

The ECU on my Ballade(Civic SR/EG) failed before the engine, its a rust bucket today with a toggle start for the Fuel pump but its still giving its current owner the some good use since i gave it away a decade ago.

i daily my 27 yr old 1997 D16Y8 Civic EX coupe. its still all mostly original condition. never been modded and will always remain stock, regular maintenance always done now at 140k on original motor and 5sp. This thing is a tank. saved my ass many many times. I planned to get rid of it years ago but glad i didnt cuz it outlasted my newer car.

Facts, engine I learned on. Completely fucked it up, ruined. But I learned how to work on engines, I learned what not to do, and it was an education that only cost me $800.

My first car was a 2000 civic with the D16y8. Stupid easy to work on and I managed to keep it running on a minimum wage job for about four years.

One of the engines that built America by reliably bringing people to work and back, and everywhere else!

Man, I miss my ‘93 EX Coupe (it was an Si here in Canada!)… most fun I’ve had in a car and I got it for $1000.

Between the RCR review, a rust-free shell, and a $1500 price tag (unheard of any more, ) i was talked into a 1993 Honda Del Sol Si. I can confirm that the D16z6 is all the engine you need to have a real good time in a light little Honda. The shifter is so good in them, they rev freely, and the z6 at least will rev to 7, 300rpm. Its not winning any drag races, but you only ever need the brake pedal in town or at a stop light. Worst decision I ever made was selling it.

The first time i ever did a head gasket and timing belt replacement was on a D series, great engine as long as you do the timing belt BEFORE it breaks so it doesn't destroy the head. Also there are vtec heads for it, just not as common but they exist

The D series was actually around until 2007 in some overseas markets, where the stock power they put out was less of a concern than their reliability
