Should you buy a used Honda Civic, or something else? | Driving.ca

New or used, the Honda Civic is one of the most sought-after vehicles among Canadians. The latest-gen Civic hit the roads about five years ago for the 2016 model year, offering numerous body styles, powertrains, and trim grades, as well as abundant features and tech that made it smarter, more connected, and more powerful.

It's a sure bet on the used market, but there are a few caveats, which we'll outline in this video. And if the Civic isn't really your cup of tea, we also list three alternatives you should consider — the Subaru Impreza, Toyota Corolla, and Mazda3.

Saying that a reliable used car is one that was taken care of by the previous owner dismisses the fact that some car brands have a history of strong quality/reliability and are designed to last while some others don't/aren't. For example, I would never buy a Fiat, no matter how cared for by the previous owner it was or how complete its service history was. On the other hand, I would buy a Toyota even if it didn't have a complete service history, as long as the price is right and it passes the PPI.

Anecdotal experience with my 2018 Civic EXT, bought new June 2018 in Westchester County, NY:
Currently, it has 118, 500 miles averaging 33.8 mpg. Impeccable maintenance. No mechanical or electronic failures/repairs to date, except for the AC system failing at 117, 000 miles (4 year mark). Honda replaced the condenser under Hondas’s extended 10-year warranty. I was not charged a single penny. No fuel dilution issues either (living in a relatively mild winter region of lower NY Hudson Valley). To date, this is the best ownership experience of any vehicle I’ve had.

Interesting to watch this. I bought my 2020 Civic Hatchback brand new back in the day. Has 30k miles now with 1.5l Turbo. No engine issues, I have run 87 octane the whole life. Probably should have gotten a manual but that's an issue for another time

honda has issued a recall for its oil dilution issue. All anyone considering a 1.5l civic has to do is make sure the recall was done.
