Accolades Gone:
Sony will be retiring PS5's Accolades feature later this year, as players have not used the awards-based system as much as the company anticipated when it was unveiled at launch.

As reported by TheSixthAxis, Sony announced in a statement that they would be pulling the plug on the Accolades feature in the coming months because uptake has been low amongst PS5 users.

"In fall of 2022, the Accolades feature on PlayStation 5 will no longer be supported," the statement read. "The feature hasn't seen the level of usage we anticipated, so we are refocusing our efforts. We encourage the community to continue to send positive messages to one another."

PS5 Increase:
Sony Interactive Entertainment is hoping it’ll be less of a challenge to get a PlayStation 5 this holiday season, thanks to what it called a “significant improvement” in the supply chain. The company plans to increase its production of PS5 consoles ahead of the holidays, Sony said in its most recent financial earnings report published Friday.

Overall, Sony’s gaming business is down, as game sales were slow while PS5 consoles have been limited in production due to supply chain issues and recurring COVID-19 lockdowns in China. Sony still intends to sell 18 million PS5 consoles in the 2022 fiscal year, and said it’s working to increase supply ahead of the holidays.

“While we stand pat on our projection of selling 18 million units of PS5 this fiscal year, conditions surrounding PlayStation 5 are improving,” chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki said during an investor call, as reported by Bloomberg. “We plan to front-load shipments for the year-end shopping season.”

The PlayStation 5 is flying off store shelves, but--due to supply chain issues and other factors--the system has not been able to match the sales success of the PlayStation 4 thus far.

Sony's latest earnings briefing shows that the PS5’s lifetime has reached 21.7 million since launch in November 2020. The PlayStation 4, by comparison, reached 25.4 million units after its first seven quarters on the market.

During a call with investors, Sony was asked about a potential PS5 price increase, something the company has done in Japan with other products, including speakers, headphones, and cameras, due to various factors

According to VGC's translation of comments made CFO Hiroki Totoki, Sony isn't prepared to comment on the possibility of a PS5 price hike. "About a potential price increase for the PS5, at this point in time there is nothing specific I can share with you about prices," the executive said.

While a price increase would be an unprecedented move for a console, we did just see this happen with the Meta Quest 2, which it itself is getting a $100 price hike in August.

WalMart + has really good odds, because most people don't know that the free trial of Walmart + does not work for special + only drops you have to pay like 13.95 or something; do that black friday weekend; expect about 6-8 drops over the month, score a PS5 and cancel WM+ Thats how I got mine last December

Was my whole issue with the next gens when they first came out is that it was such a pain to get a console and there weren't even any exclusive games to make a logical reason to pay a scalped price for one anyway lol. I've had a ps4 since the Xbox 360 days were ending and haven't looked back. So with the next gens rolling out and the severe lack of anything new on playstations end I made the jump to Xbox series S. Figured all those years on PlayStation I've probably got a good log of Xbox exclusives that will keep me busy till the companies can pop out new games lol

One way to try and get a chance to buy it with its actual price when it first came out would be to sign up with Playstation account and go to console and register for an invite when they have stocks of the console, and I think they keep tabs on the accounts in regards of who bought one and haven't yet. That's how I got my ps5 and paid around $600 it was the disc version bundle with forbidden west plus some accessories for the console.

As far as a price hike, we can thank scalpers.

It was common knowledge that Sony was selling the PS5 at a loss, factoring R&D, and all other associated costs. The hope was the make it up later with game sales.

Scalpers hoarding the consoles has damaged that plan because while on paper the consoles are being sold, they are not being sold to people who will then buy games, or PS Plus subscriptions. So now to dissuade scalpers and to not suffer anymore loss on the PS5, this is their answer.

I would not be surprised if the hike is much more than everyone thinks, just to, at least, break even. Or even more to make a profit, as businesses normally try to do.

Sony’s not getting away with a price jump if Xbox don’t do it. They have a $500 disc, $300 disc less, and $15/month GamePass that’s getting better at streaming and starting to be on every device.

Got mine two weeks ago direct from Sony with the invite. Got the disk version standalone with no game for retail price. PS Extra gives me enough games so didn’t need to pay for a bundle.

Been thoroughly enjoying Returnal and my daughter has been enjoying Astro’s Playroom.

I think it’s a great console but I don’t think it’s worth a penny above retail price.

The ratio of PlayStation 5s that have been activated to PlayStation 5s that are sitting in some scalpers basement waiting to be sold, has to be embarrassing for SONY. I hope the Slim comes soon enough to scorch the asses of the scalpers sitting on dozens, if not HUNDREDS, of PS5s!!!

One thing I would say is I’ve owned a PlayStation 4 going on about five years now and I’ve never received any invitations or any emails to buy a PS5. But about a week ago I finally received one and I went onto the PlayStation store as soon as I could and I was able to buy one! A ACTUAL PS5. Don’t give up kids 👍🏻

It's only the horizon / digtal bundle restocks in my area. I'd rather get the regular for $499 then pay extra for a game code that should have been on disc😮‍💨

I was able to get my PS5 this week because the online electronics store is organizing a raffle among its good customers. If you were among the winners, a console was reserved in your name. This time there was a delivery of 2000 consoles and there were 300, 000 applicants. I paid 600 euros for my PS5 with DVD drive + 1 game and an extra controller. Normal price in Belgium.

I got a PS5 bundle from GameStop a year ago, and just got a second one from PlayStation direct really easy. If y’all just watch when they’re being sold, you can get them really easy.

I remember hearing about Accolades when they were talking about features in the announcement video but I thought it was like VRR where it was an announced feature for a future firmware/system update. I didn't know it was an active feature. Lol....they are removing a feature because nobody uses it but Playstation still won't give us folders, A FEATURE EVERYONE WANTS! I swear sometimes I feel like Playstation is secretly a Google run division with how they just ignore or even kill features people want but keep pushing stupid shit no one wants at all.

$750 for a scalped console. I work with someone in a major retail box store who was making side deals with customers on the clock. He was selling them for $1, 100 a pop. If you are goingto use Total tech for more than getting a console it's not a terrible deal. If you just want a console it's a waste of your money all day everyday.
