Sony has announced that the PlayStation 5 will get another steep price increase in Japan.

Starting on September 2, the standard PlayStation 5 console will cost ¥79,980 ($550), a ¥13,000 ($90) increase on the current price of ¥66,980 ($460).

The Digital Edition will also see a ¥13,000 hike, rising from ¥59,980 ($415) to ¥72,980 ($505).

Other accessories will see price increases too. DualSense controllers will cost ¥11,480 – ¥11,980 ($80 – $83) compared to their current price of ¥9,480 – ¥9,980 ($65 – $68).

The PlayStation Portal will now cost ¥34,980 ($240) versus its launch price of ¥29,980 ($205).

There is no current sign of a similar price hike outside of Japan.

This isn’t the first time time Sony has increased PS5 prices in Japan, a hike it’s attributing to “recent challenging external environment, including the current fluctuations in the global economic situation, and the impact it will have on our business”.

When the console launched in November 2020, it cost ¥49,980 ($345) for the standard edition and ¥39,980 ($275) for the Digital Edition.

The new price increase means the standard console’s current price in Japan will now be around $205 more expensive than at launch, with the Digital Edition costing around $185 more.

and Sony wondering why 40% to 50% of their install base is still going strong on the ps4 to this day...

And Sony wonders why no one is upgrading from their PS4… pathetic catalogue of first party games, laughable subscription service with steep prices, every thing is still cross gen and now they’re jacking up the price! Way to go Sony lol!

Playstation/Sony doesn't give a shit about us. If the ps5pro is anymore then 600 then why not just keep saving and buy 1k computer where you have access to any games you want? Gog is looking out for PC players while Sony just keeps collecting our 20 bucks but never updates classic games with anything good.

It's very bizarre that the PS5 is seeing price increases in many territories. Are we really expecting people outside the US to finally upgrade from their PS4's if the PS5 continues to get MORE expensive?

for the pro i would somewhat understand the price increase but increasing the price of the standard one is just a slap in the face to people that haven't been able to afford a PS5 and are still on PS4 😕

This is the weirdest console generation ever...

And this will get worse if Xbox leaves the console business, yet the fanboys think Sony having the only hardcore console on the market will be the best thing ever

Shit. A new PS5 game in Canada is now $110 for a regular edition.

This is why I say PlayStation fans should route for Xbox to do better because we’re competition. The customer wins.

I wonder if this is due to the loss of money from concord and the bungie fiasco

Sony is prepping for the loss from Kraven this winter.

Concord burned a 100 million hole. So the increase seems like a compensation

I thought with PS5 pro around the corner, they would reduce the price of base PS4 like they did for the PS4. I am guessing PS5 Pro is so darn expensive that they are raising base PS5 price to make it more appealing.
