PS5 PRO - IS IT WORTH IT?

Every console generation has its mid-gen refresh, but sometimes, the "mid" is more pronounced than usual. Sony's PlayStation 5 Pro, launching on November 7th worldwide for $699.99, has generated no shortage of controversy in that regard, whether it's over the pricing, the lack of a vertical stand and disc drive, or similar CPU as the base version.

Since its reveal, however, the console has offered some impressive technology for contemporary titles. Whether it's more control over ray tracing features in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, improvements to performance and resolution in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, or somehow making Horizon Forbidden West look even better, it's certainly putting in the work.

But is PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution and advanced ray tracing truly worth it? How future-proof is the console considering the relative age of the technology and the inevitably PlayStation 6? Find out more here.

I have the PS5. I’m not sure my ol’ eyes can spot and appreciate the differences enough to pay up. (plus, I want the drive too).

If PS5 Pro is your first PlayStation this gen YES. But to upgrade to it is decided by a person to person basis.

No one questions the price of a graphics card . Stop treating console gamers like they're poor children.. we're adults. We can afford it

People forget about the 2TB SSD. It’s so nice to have for storage space alone

I'm locked in for tomorrow...stand up pro gang 💪🏿. I wonder if y'all had all this smoke for the PS4 pro? Because that also didn't launch with a new game on top of not coming with a stand...if you can't afford it or don't want it cool but keep the same energy.

For me it’s no. The minuscule upgrades and the fact it ships with no stand or disc drive is a no go for me. Also if you don’t have a tv or monitor that can make use of the pro then you’ll need a new one to make use of the upgrades.

One of the issues here is: if the PS5 Pro costs that much, how much will PS6 cost? If Sony gets away with this and PS5 Pro sells well (which despite most people saying it's not worthy and they will not buy it it will), then what stops them to sell the next console at 900 euros? At that price they don't need to sell so much.
That's why I hope PS5 Pro doesn't sell well, to let Sony know that there are limits we are not willing to cross.
Maybe it's my short sight, but even in my 4K TV, I can't appreciate at all the differences between the OG and Pro.

Tip.. if you have a slim with the disk, put it in the pro until disk stock replenishes, then sell slim 😮

$700 is not worth the 10% graphic sharpness, no disk drive or vertical stand. I’ll wait for the PS6 which will be out soon enough.

I’ll download a lot of enhanced games on the Pro overnight but I did get to check out the HZD remaster and FF7 Rebirth and the upgrade is really noticeable. Especially with Rebirth there is a huge difference and PSSR is really showing its potential there and the tech will even get better over the years. If you have a 4K screen and care about visuals this upgrade should be a no brainer if you can spend the money. But even with smaller 1080HD screens you’ll notice the sharper image quality and more fidelity overall. The first impressions today were great and exceeded my expectations, glad I made the jump to the Pro

$699 is cheap. It’s $1199 here in Australia.

If you purchased a PS5 console at launch in November 2020 for $499, its price adjusted for inflation to November 2024 would be approximately $592.10, reflecting the cumulative impact of inflation. If you sold the console for $255 in November 2024, the total cost of ownership would be $244 over the four years, resulting in an average cost of $61 per year. This calculation factors in the original purchase price, resale value, and inflation-adjusted value over the ownership period. I received a deposit for $255.00 from Back Market after sending in my vanilla PS5. The sale of the PS5 funded approximately 32.28% of the total cost of purchasing the PS5 Pro and the Disc Drive.
Or, to put it another way, I paid 67.72% of the new cost of the Pro and the disc drive. That works out to $534.99.
So, of the $534.99 spent after the PS5 sale to back market, $35.99 (approximately 7.21%) is over the original cost of the PS5.
If folks really took a minute to do the math, if you trade in your vanilla PS5, assuming you can get at least $255 for it and you owned it for 4 years, then you'd only be paying a little over 7% of the cost for a Pro and disc drive compared to the non-pro console.
