As someone who's registered to set up firework shows, with the first one, be careful. Some fireworks have potassium in them for a bigger bang, so water being added to that can cause it to explode. Read the firework label before putting water in. (Idk if normal people can rven buy those fireworks but still)

Very important when reusing tubes to carefully inspect the old tubes for ANY scratches, worn paper, frayed cardboard or god forbid dents. Any of these can indicate the tube is weakened and may explode DO NOT USE DAMAGED TUBES

Firstly id like to clarify, im a licensed Pyrotechnician with the ATF and with my state fire marshall. While im not going to proclaim to be the final word on fireworks safety id like to clarify that i am familiar with safe procedures for handling them.

In the event of a dud shell, a mortar firework that DOES NOT detonate but burns its cannon fuse, allow between 5 to 10 minutes prior to approaching the firework, this ensures that (for the most part) youre not running into any delayed reactions. Secondly when dousing a shell it is strongly suggested to do so SLOWLY and very carefully, do not jostle or shake the tube and if possible leave it where it is for at least an hour, if this isnt possible please move the tube slowly and carefully, leave it outdoors but somewhere easily watched over. For proper disposal of the shell contact your local fire department via non emergency contact numbers and enquire how theyd like the defective product handled. Burying CAN be acceptible but isn't recommended

Most of those grill lighters are regular lighters in a casing and extension. But they are way safer.

Careful reusing your mortar tubes. If you use it too much the heat could melt a hole in the tube meaning the firework can't launch as high and will go off when it's like 4 feet off the ground.

DO NOT….EVER reuse old mortar tubes made of cardboard! They will expand and contract and deform over time with different humidity. That can cause a mortar to become stuck in the tube and blow up on the ground sending shrapnel in all directions

word of advice, DO NOT USE PVC OR PLASTIC TUBING.
they can explode during a mortar launch and result in plasric shrapnel. See if you can get a 2.5" galvanized steel tube, or get extremely thick-walled paper-craft tubing (the steel is far less likely to detonate, and if the paper tube does, its just paper, its safer)

All of these are actually really unsafe water could cause certain fireworks to explode and reusing the tube. They tell you not to because if it comes with 20 shots it’s only meant for 20 shots. If you do any more, it will blow up.

The 3 point dad stance is also a must when slapping something you just put together/tied down and saying "that ain't going nowhere". Do not forget any of those steps!

As someone who has done professional city fireworks, I'm relieved to say that you're almost entirely right. All good advice, but ill add that you should dunk any shells in water after you've soaked them

man i wish everyone knew these safety tips. i wasnt outside when it happened, but my dad was filling a balloon with explosive gas and it exploded before it was ready. Everyone near it currently has hearing loss, and theyre very lucky nobody got hurt

Fireworks often have their own oxidizers, which means that getting them wet won’t matter in a lot of cases

Just last week I was coming home from work and some absolute “genius” decided to light fireworks in the intersection and it caused multiple small fires from scattered cardboard across multiple lanes as they must’ve had some makeshift firework shooter. MAKE SURE TO CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELVES!! Also check your city laws because some cities only allow fireworks on certain dates and times. You can get fined, and/or jail time if you light them outside of those times.
Remember, yes big boom and pretty lights but pets, vets with PTSD, people with noise sensitivities, and those who have to get up in the morning/are trying to sleep don’t appreciate it as much🫠
Stay safe, keep your limbs and digits, and please be considerate of yourself and others❤️🤍💙

When I was 6 my uncle went to check the mortar tube after the firework didn't go off, he had his hand blown off and had to have reconstructive surgery for it.
