First thing if you move in to a new house, change the locks, you don't know who might have a key

As a former millwork carpenter, this is a 3 on the 10 scale of to secure the deadbolt properly.
Remove the thin cover plate, router the jamb deeper to accept a 4 screw steel plate & the cover plate thickness. Predrilled the holes with the correct sized bits & secure the plate to the jack stud with the 4 larger screws. Tighten all, add the cover plate and attach. That's as strong as it can be.

Retired fireman here (2 decades on the job).

While these screws may not actually make it to the stud, I PROMISE you that the longer screws make a helluva difference with respect to forced entry. Even with the irons we use and not having to worry about being quiet or getting caught, this simple upgrade makes entry much more difficult.

If you’re going to do this, I’d recommend the same be done with the hinges as well. It doesn’t make your home entry proof, but it will absolutely make anyone who is tying that method work a lot harder to get in. Most B&E types are looking for the quick and easy in and out. Anything that you can do to make them second guess themselves or slow their entry is worth the $5-$10 worth of screws.

Keep an eye out for the light switch which is often near the door. Those wires may be closer than you think.

Don't forget the hinges as well if you really want a secure door.

You should also add a door plate around both the knob and the deadbolt. Your door is only as strong as the thinnest part of the wood surrounding each.
But that is an excellent tip.

I love to see fellows make these videos. Huge bit of comfort for family's that may have never even thought about this. Bless you

I've seen this in several videos. With the hole drilled for the short screw, what keeps the wood from cracking or warping when the screw almost 3-times as long are drilled in?

We bought a plain little
concrete 1947 block house on a wooded acre. We covered the block with siding when we added on and remodeled. When the door was kicked in, we found that the door had no frame and had simply been set into an opening in the concrete block. Only the woodwork held it. It was replaced with a Larson shatter proof storm door and a handsome new wood door with screws long enough to go into the concrete block.

Also a tip. Don't have front doors with glass on them.

Also make sure the hole is deep enough for the dead bolt to go all the way and fully engage.

First thing I learned in the cheesy at-home locksmithing course I took was this trick. Kind of a surprise to learn that the best home security improvement most people can make had nothing to do with locks, but the screws and strike plates on the other side. Locks mostly just keep honest people honest. It's the rest of the hardware that keeps the actual jerks out.

Many crooks will ring the doorbell, and if no answer, they go around back and kick in a door where the neighbors won't see them. Secure your BACK door as well.

I learned this the hard way after a break-in. When we fixed the door and doorframe, he replaced the screws with the long one.
