I'm not even a legit interior designer, I'm just into building in the sims lmao. Helpful for building realistic houses there.

This was so cool. It felt like 8 lectures on floor planning combined in 1 30 min video!

Wow! I'm learned so much in this video than when I took at class for interior design at acclaimed community college in my hometown. Crazy! I sent two semesters trying to understand and this 38 minute taught me everything and visuals go along. Thank you Mimi, you content is exactly what I needed on this platform as there not many interior designers on YT. Much love and happy creating!

Thank you all for the feedback! Just wanted to clarify to those who are concerned that I did not address certain parameters which would definitely be addressed in a real world application.... This is a VERY rudimentary overview of how the floor plan process works. I eliminated A LOT of parameters including most aspects of a usual program. I believed that adding information about sunlight, circulation, acoustics, privacy, site maps, etc. would be too advanced for this basic of a video. Of course this video does not cover the full extent of developing a floor plan, but I think that’s implied.

This kind of video makes me so giddy! Makes me confident that interior design is the right field for me to go into. Also, I can build a floor plan portfolio by creating my characters' homes, rooms, and work buildings!

We just bought an older home in Hockley, TX. The home was built in 1994 by the man who lived in it. It’s a crazy lay out. There’s only one bathroom on the bottom floor which happens to be the master . So all guest have to use it. All contractors are stumped on how to add a powder room to the bottom floor. The house has NO closets other than the ones in the bedroom. Every time we try to correct one problem, we have to correct ten others problems to fix the one we started with. I have been completely lost trying to figure things out and have the lay out make sense. This video has been a God send to me. I wish you were here to help. Thank you so much for your detailed explanation. You have made a difference for this tired homeowner.

As an interior design student currently in space planning, thank you so much! Trying to learn this through Zoom has been so difficult, but I feel so ready for my next project now thanks to this video!

Thank you for doing this. As a builder, a square or rectangle shape w/o a lot of pop-outs is very cost-efficient. I like to locate kitchens in proximity to attached garages (so you don't have to drag groceries through the house). Hallways are expensive, wasted space (minimize where you can - unless cost is no object). I like to locate laundry rooms near (not in) the garage - away from any living space (noisy). A good plan (for me) is to enter the house through the garage, go through the laundry room, then into the back of the kitchen. Of course, there is a formal front entry and a rear entry off the kitchen/breakfast nook.

Hey Mimi, I am a construction manager by profession & I am mostly into execution & designing is something that I do in my free time. The things that you covered here and the way you’ve explained everything is simply awesome and really resourceful & I have to say that I’ve never seen this kind of visualization before that makes things so clear & easier to understand.

The goal is to show clarity, not perfection. That's exactly what you've done. Good video!

I stumbled upon your video and it brought back great memories of studying to become an interior designer. I ended up staying in the industry for a short time before going into something else, but I have fond memories of that time. It is interesting how each person would interpret the same needs and floorplan completely differently. For instance, I would have eliminated the wasted space created by the dead end hallway near the bedrooms and used it to create a closet for the adjacent bedroom, or extended the bathroom space instead.

Thank you for the great explanation, it makes me realize how little time my professors spent teaching us the mechanics of designing a floorplan from scratch. We had the same tools, just don't remember seeing the process come to life the way you did here.
