I had this issue and my phone would not charge. After inspecting the charging port and not finding anything, I inspected the connector on the lightning cable. At first I thought it looked okay, but I noticed the metal connector on one side looked slightly different than the other side. I thought it was damaged, but rubbing my fingernail over it I found there was a small piece of something flat, like oil or grease or possibly even tape, over one of the metal connectors. After removing wtf that was, it worked. So, inspect the metal connectors on the cable and not just the port.
