I just bought my first house and I’m doing a knockdown texture ceiling.

Right now, I’m removing the popcorn and then doing two skim coats, priming, adding the knockdown texture, and finally painting.

Are the two skin coats a required step? Or should I skip that since I’ll be costing it with knockdown texture anyway?

I’ve already done one (small) room and trying to figure out the best process before I tackle another room.
