I like these short videos about the stuff your older vids were more about. Maybe also a link to a longer video of yours on the subject could work?

As a Clinician myself, I noticed at times when a Clinician is too sympathetical towards a client, it’s probably because there is something going on with that patient that is triggering something for them. Like their own trauma. That is why I think clinicians should seek counseling themselves, to work out these problems, so they can process these feelings, and be more attentive with their client’s.

This is really helpful to me.
I've seen many psychiatrists and they never seem to understand what I'm going through. I started to believe that they think that I'm full of feces and that they think I'm a liar. It's so frustrating. My issues are very real and raw.
Thank you so much

I love these, Dr Grande, the public at large need to be equipped with this knowledge, and I thank you for making things clear!

Thank you for this. Last week a couple of nurses were arguing because of one them understood these terms in reverse. Empathy is also important in physical health care professions.

Thanks Dr. Grande! I'm so happy to see a short video by you. I think I'm in both categories. Sometimes I am drained by my sympathy. It can really take a toll on a person if it is always felt.

My dad’s Oncologist definitely had sympathy for my daddy. He said I apologize I’ve never cried in front of a patient, but you have changed the way I will do my job and view my patients going forward. I’ve never met a man like you before. 😭😭😭😭😭 my dad was the best man I ever knew.

I have missed the 5 factor model so much. I’m not diagnosing anyone, simply speculating on what what may be happening in a situation like this

Wow. I've always thought it was the other way around. Thanks for clearing this up.

Thank you! This was very helpful. My therapist was giving examples of how he has demonstrated empathy to me and only later did I realize I actually wanted more sympathy. Now I understand why it's not so good for the client. Excellent explanation and video 👍

It took me 57 years to learn the difference between helping and enabling because I’m very very very empathetic to the point it can cripple me by rendering me useless. I’ve learned the hard way that Empathy must be tempered with Logic. This needs to be taught to us en masse

I was asked about empathy at our weekly meeting at work and my supervisor said it was right on and that's because I've studied psychology for about 45 years I really wanted to be a psychologist but all the schooling that it takes was just overwhelming at the time so I've worked on myself for the same 45 years paid attention to life itself and I could give the best definition of empathy because I study it thank you Dr g

One of the lessons I learned in nursing school was on the difference of empathy and sympathy. Empathy is definitely important when dealing with very sick patients.

Thank you Doctor Grande for explaining these two emotions. And thank you also for explaining narcissism so perfectly too. I always wondered what was wrong with people who acted like that. They hurt so many people and don't even give a shit about others feelings! It's awful how someone that you love so dearly can treat people so badly and be so hateful and they really think that they are entitled to be so hateful. So now, I, as a loving and giving person, will try not to show any empathy or sympathy to a narcissistic person. See how they like being treated like shit!!

Let's go with the general Google defs:
Empathy:—the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
Sympathy:—feelings of pity and sorrow for someone else's misfortune.
It's (unhelpfully) odd that the clinical definitions seem to be opposite to the generally-understood. I must remember this in future.

I like Brene Browns explanation on both terms. I think the definition is changing and we are not all connecting with the changes over time. "empathy - understanding others, forming a connection by understanding." "sympathy: I feel for them/feel bad for them (pity)"

The definition also seems to vary between languages. In german, sympathy is used when you have a positive attitude or feeling towards someone. When you like someone or like having a conversation with someone you'd say something like "he seems sympathetic to me". Empathy is most often used in both affective and cognitive sense. When you feel the emotions of the other person or can put yourself in their shoes for example.
