Its really hard to run on empty, not impossible, but the recovery... physical or mental/emotional, the process is always intensive because of the deprivation being severe...

This is like trusting the body to heal, and letting go of fear.

Just a side note, where I think Maslow's Hierarchy is wrong is that it assumes the needs are static in that order and that's just untrue. Not to mention that there's more to it than just those needs that Maslow laid out, and that you can acquire some needs without necessarily requiring prerequisite needs, which proves it's not a static, materialistic process... but that's another story and also beside the point. It's basically whatever you need to survive by preserving yourself from dying more immediately/quickly from a particular cause or missing need compared to other causes or missing needs, that's what takes priority. For example, you could still be dying or severely incapacitated if you had enough food, clothing and shelter if you've suffered a significant physical wound, poisoning or some psychologically traumatic event that you cannot handle well at a given time. And I reckon it's the same thing when chasing after a goal to attain that particular need or achievement. The point is that the guy has a point here... it's just that it wasn't necessary to mention Maslow's Hierarchy to make his point.

Of course, sometimes giving up is the correct answer.
