Rebellion to Tyrants: The Sermon that Sparked the Revolution

“Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God.” Just after the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776, a committee of Jefferson, Adams, and Franklin worked to design a great seal for the United States - and it included that powerful phrase on the reverse. While we don’t know who originally wrote it, we can trace its roots to Jonathan Mayhew’s widely read but mostly forgotten 1750 sermon on resisting tyranny. In it, he laid the moral and philosophical foundation for the Revolution - and in this episode, you’re going to learn all about it.

As Christians, we are obliged to submit to government leadership is predicated on the government acting in concert with Gods law. If the government has gone beyond Gods law and is tyrannical, then yes, we have a duty to resist.

Michael I joined as a member and just watched the documentary, it was powerful and moving. I never realized so many intelligent and informed Patriots were out there making a difference! I have felt kind of alone for many years and after awhile of getting laugh off and the "conspiracy theory" label I just got discouraged and kind of put my head down and gave up. About a year and a half ago I started studying and trying to learn more which is how I stumbled onto your YouTube Channel . I’m reading Lysander Spooner’s “No Treason, No. VI: The Constitution of No Authority” (1870), in “The Anarchist Handbook”, and I have to say that it’s a compelling read, and very easy to digest. I noticed that the excerpt you highlighted about the highwayman was taken from this work. Love it!

“The Anarchist Handbook” also contains an excerpt from “True Civilization: An Immediate Necessity, and The Last Ground of Hope for Mankind”, written by Josiah Warren in 1863. I found this incredibly inspiring, and totally in alignment with my own philosophy. This IS the time of its immediate necessity!

“For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you not have fear of him who is in authority? Then do what is good and you will have his approval.”
Implicit in Paul’s statement is that those in authority promote what is good.
We now have a system that promotes evil and disorder. One who does good is punished, those who are evil get rewarded. Everything has been turned upside down.
When those in authority violate natural law by keeping people from going to work, violate property rights, promote sexual perversions and child mutilation we have a duty to rebel.

you can not over state the religious motivations and influence of the pulpit in the American revolution. it would bring needed context to this history to see more of this type of discussion on 'path to liberty'

Honestly it was Alex Jones who made me aware of the slogan. It was one of his bumper sound bights (yes bights not bites) on his show. So I had to look it up. I love that the tenth amendment center goes this deep, we need to relearn this stuff while we still can.

This new form of tyranny, what and who can arrest these officials...legal Lee's ....sold out to bankers no gold sliver or substance? What Law on Maritime Merchant can change these rules ers.. surely the courts super smart peoples know the wrongs they do each day against we and constitutional rights??
