I had a friend that rebuilt alternators for a company that resold them to AutoZone back in the day. She said initially they would rebuild pretty much everything on the alternators but after a year or so they were told to only replace items that were initially defective. Then they would spray their half assed rebuilt alternators with a shiny metallic paint in an effort to make it "look better than new." Surprisingly that paint did not help on the returns which approached 40%!

I only buy car parts from Zalinsky, the auto parts king. He makes car parts for the American working man, cause thats who he is, and that's who he cares about.

I used to work for Oreillys and majority of the parts sold were made in china and mexico. As far as warranties went the company decides to change the part numbers every couple of years so it makes it harder to locate the "lifetime" warranty items. Usually new hires won't be able to find your warranty it takes an rss or store manager to do so. Save your receipts.

Your method of fixing the power rack fixed my 93 Camry ten years ago and it is still working fine.

Until today, I've agreed with everything you've ever said Scotty, but if magnetic plugs are so useless why are the required for aircraft engines? I've always added them in my vehicles that they weren't OEM.

I think I'll keep that up.

Nailed it! Back in the 80s 90s I replaced lot's of engines with longblock rebuilds and had no issue's. I don't trust any rebuilt engines these days. Safer to replace with a good used one from a reputable place

O'Reilly's engines are trash used to work there and the quality sucks, most of the times the engines once installed started to leak and fall apart

Magnetic drain plugs are useful for preventing debris from causing too much damage before reaching the filter. Even more useful in a differential housing etc. where there's no filter.

I used to work at Advance Auto Parts. Their quality has gone down massively. All there crap is made in Mexico and China. Buy Rockauto if you have to buy aftermarket parts. If not, buy OEM parts if there available.

I had a ‘98 Mazda B4000 truck (same as a Ranger). It took 3 starters from Autozone to get one that actually worked. It had a lifetime warranty and cost $125, instead of $480 and a 30 day warranty from the dealership. The 3rd time only took me 38 minutes to change it. It was still worth the extra time and effort to save over $350. On the plus side, the rebuilt alternator worked perfectly (cost about $125 also) and only took about 20 minutes to swap out. That was a badass little truck and so easy to work on. It had plenty of low end torque, got about 18.5 mpg, a great ride, and could do 50-60 foot burnouts. I loved that truck.

I had a 78' Ford with the inline 6. Only bad part was it was 2WD and I live up north. Not the greatest winter truck, but that engine is legendary.

I didn't know it, but an engine rebuilder said some re-manufacturers bid out, and if low price is all they want, that may include bad parts as a result. Surprising they'd do that.

When you share your knowledge it takes me back to 1967. Highschool seniors did their own car work. It was a great life. Being a senior now, i dont have the strength . Oh, the good old days. My car a 1967 barracuda. I bough it because I would win all street races against the mustang's. Those were the days. Crusing the Boulevard.

Those discount part stores now have 'limited' lifetime warranties they will replace it once and you are on your own after that. They are becoming strict about enforcing it too so consider that before gambling on their remaned parts.

I had a similar issue with an 86 Buick 307 back in 1996. This rebuild came from Auto Zone. Burning oil in 10K miles
