I've studied Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwon Do, and Hapkido and in MY opinion Hapkido is the most realistic and effective, in actual street fighting, of the three. Unfortunately I have had to use it many times in my teens and twenties and it never let me down. It may not be so fancy to look at but if you're looking for self defense I highly recommend it. I wonder why it is so hard to find schools for it in the US. Just my opinion. I'm not looking for an argument just stating what worked for me.

Hapkido is not a mix if aikido, judi and tae kwon do- and hapkido has a lot of different kicks- a much larger variety than aikido as there are many aerials. Hapkido in if itself is a wonderfully complete martial art- save for its focus primarily on defense.

both great arts, all depends on what you're looking to gain by practicing an art.

Hapkido is one of the original MMA. There are others, but it is the same as traditional Japanese Aiki-Jujitsu

I tend to see hapkido has more in common with jujitsu than aikido.

I studied Hapkido for a few years and always described it as Tae Kwon Do and Aikido mixed.

Even footwork is very different and the movements in hapkido seem to have less emphasis on moving around and doing all the footwork with opponent than aikido. Its therefore a straightfoward self defence art. You may find aikido much more difficult to use

Does Steven Seagal practice the brutal version of hapkido/aikido? He doesn't seem to flow that much. He flows more like concrete than water. 🤔

They have very little to do with each other other than Hapkido employs the circular motions on throws, etc. But what do I know, Ive only studied these two along with Judo, Aikijujitsu, and a few others for 30+ years.

Actually, this may not be the truth; during the WW2 lots of Japanese soldiers brought over martial art from Korea and China and later passed it off as ancient Japanese martial art. Many Japanese martial art founders were imperial soldiers who were stationed in either China or Korea and some of those stationed in Russia spent considerable time in these two country. For example, there is strong evidence that Jujutsu was stolen from Korea during Japanese annexation because they never bothered to change the name!!! Japanese book burning didn't erase all the record. Most people have no idea the extent of cultural thief by Japan during WW2... this is just a small window into a vast inconvenient truth.
